Q: 4S shuts down randomly

iPhone 4S iOS 7.1.2 - 16GB

Since 2013 the phone has been fine until a couple of weeks ago when it started shutting down randomly; on opening an App, looking at a picture, searching on Safari or even just 'sliding to unlock', the screen went blank. The battery reading was always over 50%, but when attempting to 'power up' was shown the 'Battery Low - attach charger' screen.

Have tried a DFU (Download Firmware Update), reinstalled backup file(s) and completed the battery charge / discharge cycle a couple of times.

Still switches off randomly - sometimes I get 5 minutes but normally less.

Have acquired another 4S (awaiting Apple activation as I type) and have removed SIM from 'old' phone and HEY the old phone works fine WITHOUT the SIM card (except it can't be used to make calls - i.e. the useful bit). But the phone operates exactly as before NEVER switches itself off (except timed-out) - I have total control - to take pictures and use the calculator…

So I put tried the SIM again and the phone shuts down.

No new Apps installed - but have updated a few. No recent software updates. I have dropped it a couple of times but it bounced in its rubber case - no visible damage - may have dislodged something I suppose but no 'rattles', and as stated works fine without the SIM.

Any idea's?

Is the SIM 'shorting' the old phone in its tray?

Could my SIM mess up my 'new' 4S?
