Jul 29, 2016 8:33 PM in response to klk9876by gail from maine,I am running El Capitan, and I'm still using iPhoto, Aperture, as well as Photos, so if you had been keeping your iPhoto app up to date, you still would have it. It's not like it was kept a secret...
Anyone updating to a brand new operating system has all kinds of information available to them via the internet as well as on Apple sites, which provide you with all you need to know about the new updated system you are about to upgrade to. It is your job to do a little research before jumping in with both feet. And if someone makes a suggestion about doing something like upgrading your system out of the blue, you need to ask questions, get info, see data before just going along as though you have no say in the matter.
Not sure what you mean about losing the ability to find Word documents by searching using Spotlight or Finder. I am not having any issues doing so, so perhaps you could explain exactly where you are runnng into trouble so we could try to help.
Did you want some help here? If so, then please explain what issues you are running into, what you are wanting to do, what happens when you try to do that? What seems to be missing, etc.
Or not....
Cheers,
GB

Jul 29, 2016 9:16 PM in response to klk9876by LarryHN,1 - the demise of iPhoto was published and widely discussed for over a year prior to the release of photos about a year and a half ago - clearly for o=someone to miss 2 1/5 years of news is not Apple's fault
2 - no one ever forces you to upgrade/update anything - all upgrades/updates or optional and totally user controlled
3 - iPhoto is not gone and still works although no way to tell for how much longer - you need the latest version 9.6.1
4 - Photos is most certainly not inferior to iPhoto - in fact it is far advances and Photos odes not require use of iCloud on any way - use of iCloud has many advantages but is a totally optional new feature (and is one of the many reasons Photos is a big advance from iPhoto)
If you would like to ask concise questions rather than post crazy, inaccurate RANTs we can help

Jul 30, 2016 9:25 AM in response to gail from maineby klk9876,I suggest it is the job of the apple store staff to let me know, when I ask specifically if I will lose any apps or if anything will change, when they update the operating system, that they can take a look at my computer and let me know. In other words, I *did* in fact ask questions. And I did do research online. I don't appreciate the scold. ("Cheers" after that is a nice touch.)
As for the search problem: the fact that you are not having trouble finding Word documents using Spotlight in El Capitan does not mean it isn't a problem for others. Lots of others in these and similar forums are having such problems, and when I worked at length on the issue with a senior Mac advisor on the phone (after having spent numerous hours going through the solutions proposed on the various forums), when I sent him documents, he had the exact same issue on his own Mac with finding documents using Spotlight and Finder. He graciously admitted there was a problem with Spotlight and Finder, and still has not resolved the problem I am having. That being a separate problem, it probably does not belong on this thread. There is perhaps an issue when one transfers documents to a new hard drive and at the same time updates the operating system. At any rate, so far no one has been able to explain it or solve the problem.

Jul 30, 2016 9:30 AM in response to klk9876by klk9876,More specifically about iPhoto: now, when I go to iPhoto on my Apps and click on the icon (which has a white circle and diagonal bar across it), it says, "In order to open iPhoto.app, you need to update to the latest version." But when I then click to follow the link to the App store, it says that "The item you've requested is not currently available". So while it may not be "gone," I cannot open it on my computer, and I cannot update it through the App store in order to be able to open it.

Jul 30, 2016 9:30 AM in response to klk9876by LarryHN,Ok - then call the store manager and tell him - telling the users here is a total waste of your and our time as we have noting at all to do with it and have no power to change anything - you need to learn how to solve problems - wasting your time telling people who can not do anything is crazy - the store manager or Apple corporate can do something - spend your time with the appropriate people

Jul 30, 2016 9:33 AM in response to LarryHNby klk9876,My posts were certainly not "crazy" and I do not appreciate being called such things. If you aren't interested in helping, or have any suggestions, feel free to ignore my post, for heaven's sakes.

Jul 30, 2016 8:02 PM in response to klk9876by gail from maine,This thread has outlined many times how to retrieve your iPhoto app: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities.
The change to El Capitan (as to any major upgrade - those with a new name), incorporate hundereds of changes. Everyone puts a different value on what change may be important to them. Again, asking a generic question as to whether you will lose any apps, or if anything will change.....well, there is simply no easy answer to that. Some actual apps that run on an older version of OS X, may no longer be supported by the new one. And with, literally, hundreds of app, there is simply no way anyone can say whether that would happen or on not. And "if anything will change"? Sure, lots of stuff will change. Sorry, you may think it is scolding, but you are the person responsible for checking this stuff out by taking a few hours on the internet to research it. You don't really expect to get a full, clear, complete, overview of any and every concern you may have during an impromptu Q&A do you?
As for the Spotlight issue. I remind you again, that we are all just users like you. So, you are welcome to throw in the towel on the spotlight issue you are experiencing, or you can provide this forum a clear, complete, specific, description of the issue you are running into and the circumstances surrounding that issue in the best detail you can. Does it ever work? When it does, what kind of search are you doing? When it doesn't work, are there specific common elements involved in the search that may help to pinpoint the issue? Remember, the folks answering questions on this forum every day are people who use these devices not only in everyday practicle ways, but who also experiment with the problems that people report and oftentimes come up with solutions that work in a practicle world sense.
So, give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Cheers,
GB
