Q: Generating photo title from the photo's file name - can I do it with an automated procedure.
I have imported into Photos thousands of old images with long and descriptive file names. The problem is that the Title metadata remain empty for all imported photos. I would like to set each photo's title to its file name. I've been going through photos and copying the file name to the title on a photo by photo basis, but I've simply got too many images to get through them without making it my full-time job.
Is there a way to automate the assignment of file name to title in situations where the title is empty? Is there a way to request that the title be set to file name during the import process? (To Apple: if not, why not?) Can I write a script to assign title from file name?
Thanks for any idea you can offer.

There are user scripts to do this
Script: Changing the Title to the Filename without Extension
Script: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename w/Extension
and Old Toad has compiled some of these into applications
