Q: automatic login disabled

OS 10.11.3

mac book air

I have checked the standard problems:

password is NOT iCloud password
file vault is OFF
lock at the bottom is unlocked

The filed is disabled, I can not let any users have auto login.

Security and Privacy has not setting to disable automatic login.

any thoughts?

If you don't see the setting I would try creating a new user and see if it's there. You could also test in Safe Mode. If you don't see it in a new user or Safe mode I would run the Combo updater.

Go to system preferences>users & groups. Click on login options. Set automatic login to off in the drop down menu.

What makes you think that anyone can log in without a password? It is greyed out because you have the pane locked.

Not the entire pane, just that setting, the bottom left has an unlocked icon.

In System Preferences > Security and Privacy. Make sure "Disable automatic login" is disabled.

I can not find this setting, can you send me a screen shot? Is it still in El Capitan? If you know the plist setting I can look there also.

I did the update to 10.11.6 and still don't have it. Do you know the plist file that this changes?

No I don't. Perhaps someone else will have an idea.

Did you try creating a new Admin user or booting into Safe mode?

If neither works you could try resetting the SMC.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for all your ideas. Sadly, none of them have worked. I tried deleting the plist files that seem logical; but that didn't help either. I see the check box appear for a fraction of a second sometimes, but no were near long enough for me to make it work.

It sounds like something is blocking the setting. You could run EtreCheck and post the results here. Maybe something will show in the report.

The person I was doing this for tried calling Apple, that didn't help either. I'm still looking into this for her. I ran EtreCheck; nice program! Unfortunately that did not seem to find anything odd. The unexpected config file is for AVG. Everything else looks good to me.

Hello !
When file vault is enabled automatic login is disabled . in my system i have set file vault that's why in second screen shot automatic login disappears .
If you don't want anyone to use your computer form administrator account and create a strong password for it , so that you can lock system preferences applications , and have full privileges .

Password is not i cloud password ? puzzled please highlight it .
