Q: 3 days to import mail messages since update to 10.11.6?
Having updated to El Capitan 10.11.6, I opened Mail and was invited to import Mail Messages to the new format.
3 days later, it still hasn't finished.
I can't use Mail at all. It was working fine until the update.
What can be done to solve this?

I understand from your post that after upgrading to OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 that you were invited to import your mail messages, but it has taken 3 days and it still has not completed the process. I understand how important it is for you to be able to access your mail after upgrading the software on your MacBook Pro.
I recommend force quitting the Mail app and then opening it again.
Force an app to close on your Mac
If the issue persists, you will want to restart your Mac and test it again.
