Q: How can I find a Book theme with the right combination of text and picture layout?

I'm trying to make a Book project i Photos for Mac. I would like to include text, but then discovered some themes don't have it; the one I picked had only whole pages of text. Another one did, but offered just 3 pictures in per page, in pretty strange layouts.

The main problem is that when I pick I can't see anything else than the cover. I have to create the project to see what I get. Is there any other way to see the them, or pick one based on preferences?

And when did things get so crappy? I created a book in iPhoto, and that was really easy.

Essentially by trial and error.  What I did is create a test book with a couple of photos with the first available book theme.  I then duplicated it a number of times and changed the theme to one of the others.  I now have a test book for each of the themes.

When I want to create a new book with a particular theme I duplicate the test book, rename it and use it.

There is a user tip that generally desire each of the book themes:  Photo Book Formats and Features.  If the descriptions do not suffice then the trial and error described above will be necessary.

When you test a book theme for the layout, make sure you select an inner page of the book, before you click the page layout button. Otherwise the page layouts may be strangely limited, because the title page will be selected by default.

I've made quite a few photo books as I make a photo book for every year for my sons. I've found that the one I keep coming back to is the Picture book theme as it is the most flexible. For 5x7 books the photos for 2-4 photo layouts can be blown up the most on each page if you select the right layout. (ie there isn't too much white space). I use 'fit to frame' quite a bit to get all the photo included in the layout.

I do like some of the other themes but if the photos aren't of close up people then the photo layouts don't suit as the photos are too small and there is too much white space.

I usually use the full page layout, without any borders.  And for landscape photos the two-pages spread. If a photo is not worth to be shown full-page, it is not worth to be included in a book.

Thanks Leonie for that timely reminder! The memorial photobook for my mother I'm working on at the present has blown out to 100 pages and I need to focus on quality not quantity... Unfortunately some of the old photos I'm trying to use don't have enough resolution hence I'm trying the smaller sized book.
