Q: MacBook Air keychain freezing after security update

I installed the security 2016-004 update this morning on my MacBook Air running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 . This afternoon when I went to download an app, which I require the admin password to do, the installation froze. On a little more investigation, anything I do that would require the password will cause that program to freeze, even just the "show password" option in Keychain. The authentication box never appears, the whole thing just gets locked in the rainbow wheel of doom. I can't be sure it's the security update, but that's the only thing I've changed recently. Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

In safe mode, everything operated as it should. When I restarted in normal mode, the problem was still there.

You can start by removing the adware. Etrecheck can do that for you.

    MacKeeper Removal

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Okay, I tried removing the .plist. No luck. Still having the same problem. And I did remove the MacKeeper files, who knows when or how those got there.

Did you remove the 2 adware files showing in the report?

Run the report again and where you see the red Adware, click Remove. Once complete, run the report again and post a copy into a new reply.

Try removing this .plist using the above instructions.

Yes, I removed those the first time I ran it. Here is another report per request. As a side note, the remove button on etresoft wouldn't delete the file for me (I can't remember the error message it gave me) and I had to go through and do it myself. I don't know if that's important or not.

I tried removing the Keychainaccess.plist. No change.

Any chance that updating to El Capitan might overwrite whatever the problem is? That was on my list of things to do before this problem started...

Try running Keychain Access/First Aid and resetting the original keychain.

Keychain Reset     See 2nd to last paragraph

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account
