Q: macbook pro freezes when mouse stops

I am encountering a very strange issue with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina display.   When I login the system will freeze once I stop moving the mouse.  If I continously move the mouse the system works, but if I stop moving it for about 2-3 seconds, the whole system freezes and I have to force it off using the power button.  I've troubleshooted it all the way down to a clean install of El Capitan 10.11.6 but even after the clean install it still does the same thing.  Of course it looks like a HW issue but just wanted to see if any else has had this issue and if there was a solution which was not related to HW.

It would help more if you listed what you tried already, we can't look into your mind. But run Diagnostics for a start.

Apple diagnostics is not as comprehensive as the proprietary software they use at the Apple Store, but it may pick up something. Depending on the age of your system, you will use one or the other.

Thanks Macjack - Had done the diagnostics which came back with no issues.  Had done all of the following prior and after the clean install.  Reset NVRAM/PRAM & SMC, Disk utility First Aid and disk repair from recovery mode.  Reinstalled El Capitan from recovery mode.

    Thanks, that helps.

Let's rule out software. Please download and run EtreCheck,  (if you can keep you Mac running for about 2 minutes.) It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

The log looks great! It doesn't look like software. And we can skip DiskUtility, First Aid. You've been there, done that.

At this point I'd suggest taking your MBP into to an Apple Store and having them run a free diagnostic. Make an appointment with an Apple Genius, who can run further diagnostics and pin point what's wrong.

Try rebuilding the Spotlight index. Indexing is associated with mds which is using to much CPU

I have been experiencing the same issue on my 15" MBP running 10.10.5.

It will work perfectly fine as long as i keep moving the trackpad. I couldn't believe it at first but continued to test to make sure that the trackpad movement was what would keep it running somehow.

Have you been able to fix it yet?

I forgot to mention that I have the same issue as you but the machine does not freeze in safe mode, even if i stop moving the trackpad.

tried all disk first aids, havent reinstalled yet, since it doesnt happen in safe mode.
cant figure out where to start as far as what could relate to the trackpad and the OS in this way,

    sooo stumped

To everyone who is experiencing the same issue, unfortunately Apple has diagnosed it as a logic board issue and I will have to fork out $330 to have it replaced. It'll take 2 to 3 days to complete but I'll give you the full details when I get the unit back.

I cant believe it. I will have to do the same. I am in South America and travelling to Copenhagen for 5 days. Does anyone have this problem in Europe and do you think it's possible to have the computer repair in a couple of days in Denmark?
