Q: Question on Icloud and photos connected with Iphone

I back up my pictures from my ipnone to icloud. Today I needed to clear space on my phone so I made sure the photos and videos were backed up to the cloud but when I deleted them from my phone they are now gone from the cloud. Why??

I thought the cloud kept everything so you can free up your phone. What am I doing wrong that will keep my photos and info on the cloud when I delete from the phone.

And of course I haven't sync my phone in over a month!!

Thank you

Laurie

If you have Settings > iCloud > Photos > iCloud Photo Library turned on then any photos you delete from the phone will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to that iCloud Photo Library.

iCloud Photo Library as it is currently is primarily a method of syncing among devices. It is NOT a backup and it is not designed to be a cloud-only storage solution.

You can potentially reduce the space required for the photos on your phone by turning on "Optimize iPhone Storage" on the same Settings screen referred to above.

Thank you for letting me know this. I guess I learned my lesson by not syncing my phone for over a month!

Can I do anything to get back what I deleted once I deleted them out of Recently Deleted folder???

With iCloud Photo Library enabled, you cannot delete a photo on one device (or at iCloud.com) without deleting it from every device that uses iCloud photo library (and iCloud.com). In order to save space on your mobile devices (and indeed your Mac if you wish to do so) turn on optimisation for photos on these devices (settings > photos & camera > optimise storage on your mobile device and Photo preferences > optimise storage on your Mac)

Optimisation is dynamic, it reduces the resolution of your photos as and when needed, so you may not notice it occurring at first. However when it is needed, it is very effective and users have reported libraries being optimised to much less than 10% of their original size in some cases. My own library is about 9% of its original size on my phone.

In most cases optimising your photos should be enough to elevate space related issues on your device. If however you have an exceptionally large library you may need to turn off iCloud photo library on your mobile device and use photo stream instead. You can then use a computer to handle photo stream photos and have them automatically imported into you iCloud photo library.

If you deleted them from the Recently Deleted album, they are gone.
