Q: Contacts slows to a crawl when creating or editing after upgrading to Yosemite from Mavericks

Upgraded (3) days ago from Mavericks 10.9.5 to Yosemite 10.10.5. Today, trying to create or edit contacts is excruciatingly slow.

N.B.: I do NOT store my Contacts in iCloud. All contacts are stored on my mid-2010 17" MacBook Pro. I do NOT use iCloud Drive.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Thank you very much, Eric. I ejected my Time Machine external HD and booted into Safe Mode. I disabled Clam XAV. In System Preferences, I deleted (2) preference panes: Java per instructions in an Apple Forum, and Quark XPress 9.3 updater. When I rebooted in normal mode, typing in Contacts got much faster, but there is still an unsettling lag when tabbing between fields, saving or switching between groups.

Is there anything else I can try?

in EtreCheck, do you want a specific test or “Just Checking”? Should I uncheck “Hide Apple tasks”? Should I enable “check the signatures of Apple tasks”?

Just try running the program in Just Checking. I would hide the Apple tasks. Yes to the last one.

Sorry not to get back to your sooner. For reasons unknown, I missed the report. Try uninstalling Avast. Anti-virus software isn't normally required on a Mac and can interfere with the OS.

Thank you so much, Eric. I apologize for being pushy. FYI, the version of Avast for Mac that I installed comes with a separate uninstall application.

I uninstalled Avast, secure-deleted the trash and rebooted. I opened a new contact and started typing. At first, it was much, much faster — almost back to normal. When I moved the cursor to another field, I still got a delayed response, though not as bad as it has been.

I really appreciate all your help!

You are welcome. You weren't being pushy at all, I just for unknown reasons  missed your post. Finder, Mail, and several other OS related functions are crashing. Try booting into the Safe Mode and then do a normal restart.
