Q: iMac cannot restart to finnish installing Snow Leopard update
Hi,
I am currently using a late 2009 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6
Specs are:
- 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
- 4 GB 1067 MHz RAM
After clicking on "Software Update", it said there is a new version of Snow Leopard available (10.6.1). It asked me whether I wanted to download the updates now and then, after downloading, whether I wanted restart to finnish installing the updates. For some reason shutting down and the turning on the computer does not complete the update, it needs a restart. I clicked on "Restart Now" and as usual, it closed all of my apps until just the desktop background was the only thing on the screen. At this point, the computer would normally power off. However, this time the background stayed there. I was able to change volume but nothing else. I left it there for about half and hour and the computer started to get hot, so I turned it off using the power button. I then turned the computer on and clicked on "About This Mac" to see if the updates had installed but they had not.
I have tried multiple keyboard shortcuts during start-up including:
- Command-R
- Option-Command-R
- Holding C to boot using the installation disk
- Holding Shift to open in safe mode
Does anyone know why my computer cannot restart to complete a partial installation? Or another way I could install Mac OS X 10.6.1
Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex, try the Combo Update from this site:
Combo Update
Apple - Support - Downloads
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any system files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should not touch any inside your Home folder.
