Q: I downloaded the new software recently and now my Epsom printer doesn't work

iMac late 2009. Processor 3.06 GHz

Hi I downloaded the new software recently and now my Epsom printer doesn't work and my Wi-Fi on the computer keeps dropping out.

I spoke with Epsom and they recommended removing the drivers and reinstalling them. I now can't install the drivers ad the Wi-Fi is not working properly. Looking at this forum I see there have been many issues with the new software release. Can anyone help me?

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Hi Eric I tried as you suggested. In the guest a/c the same thing happened. The printer drivers were installing and about 40% of the way stopped progressing. This should have been a 5 min installation but to get to this point it took hours. in the guest a/c it took about 15 mins. to get to the same point. I also tried the safe mode and that did not work either.

I am not very technical but do you have any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

Hi Eric I have managed to install the Epson Printer drivers, but it still fails at the point of connecting from the printer to the MAC. On the Epsom status report under IPP Non-Secure Communication it states "Not Allowed". Do I need to register the printer's MAC address to prevent it being filtered? If so do you know how to do this?

    Thanks

You would have to ask Epson that question. I've never heard of that problem before. Have you tried restarting the printer and the computer?

Ping printer: If you have the printers IP address open Terminal (Applications/Utilities) and at the prompt type: ping {printerIP}. You will get a reply or failure.

Hi Eric thank you very much for your help and suggestions. They all helped me get this resolved eventually with Epson.

It looks like the latest OS El Captain v10.11.6 does not recognise Epson as an identified Developer. So I was advised to change the security and privacy setting to "anywhere" from the standard "Mac App Store & identified developers" setting. Then I had to type in the IP address as the printer name didn't show up in the printers list. All working now.

On the plus side I have learnt a lot.
