Q: how to stop mail program automatically open when email is received

I downloaded the latest software up date and since doing so my Mail program will open automatically onscreen as soon as an email is received, even when it is in the tray and not opened on screen.  It is really annoying.  I will be in the middle of typing a document and here comes an email and ruins it.  HELP!

    Greetings Nancy Reed,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It appears that the Mail App on your Mac is opening on it's own whenever you receive an unread email. That would drive me to distraction too especially at work. I'll be glad to help you get to the bottom of this.

Mail (El Capitan): Use rules to manage your inbox -- Since I use rules for different things, there may be a rule in the App that needs to be edited/deleted. Use this article to help you locate what you may have.

If you found no rules that could be causing this then continue on. Test the problem by either sending yourself an email or have someone else send one to see how the app behaves.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Even though your Mac finishes starting up, using Safe Mode can help isolate where problems are occurring on it. It can also fix certain issues.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- This step will show whether the issue is just in your account or if it's system wide. Add your email address to the user you create to test.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac -- If you've reached this point, before continuing on be sure your data is kept safe by creating a fresh backup.

About OS X Recovery -- Once you're confident your data is safe, boot your Mac into Recovery Mode and reinstall the operating system.

Hope you have a good day!
