Several times a day this popup appears asking me to log into App Store to download something.  It doesn't say what.   No matter what I am doing.  I close it and it keeps coming back.  What is it and how do I get rid of it.  Running Yosemite 10.10.5 on laptop.  Itunes in not running and is the only thing I have that uses the App Store.

The App Store is asking for the Apple ID used to purchase an app, most likely to check for updates to it. Which app is not known.

You will need to provide the Apple ID you used to purchase whatever app it might be. If you're not sure what that Apple ID might have been, start here: https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid. You might need to use the "Forgot Apple ID" link on that page.

I use the ID to get to this page.  It works but when I try to log in to the App store it gives me a blank box with the words  update your apple ID.  ???

On about the 4th try using my user name I got this.   The email address shown is correct but when I hit continue, nothing happens.  This is really a pain in the *** for something I really have no idea what it's about.

Is that your correct Apple ID? Please do not post it on a publicly viewable website. I asked this site's Hosts to eliminate or edit the screenshot.

Please use Safari to navigate to that web page, and describe the result. Or, quit Firefox and launch it in Safe Mode: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode.

I reset the password.  Went to recover the verification code and got a message saying "This email address is already in use with another apple id."  It's the only one I have so there is a mix-up somewhere.   I tried to open Safari but it says it cannot be opened while it's being updated. ??

I understand this is frustrating. You're right, there is a mix-up somewhere, and due to the secure nature of Apple IDs it will not be possible for me to positively determine just what it may be.

I suggest you start here: Apple ID - Official Apple Support and scroll down to the bottom of the page, where you will find a button labeled "Get Support" beneath the heading "Help me with Apple ID". Click it. That will load a page with the heading "What’s happening with your Apple ID".

The choice most applicable to your concern is "Other Apple ID Topics" which will lead to more options. One of them will lead to contacting Apple directly. Let them sort things out. Be patient with them, since your Apple ID is literally the key to your account security and they will need to positively establish your identity before fixing whatever is wrong.

One thing that I noticed about the Apple ID on your (since deleted) screenshot was that it was an email address in the form of something@email.net, which has been a required form of Apple ID for a number of years now.

The Apple ID populated by the App Store dialog in your original post does not appear to be an email address. (I realize you obscured it, but it doesn't appear to be long enough for an email address.) That was OK for a long time, but it's not any more, and is probably the reason you are being harassed to update your Apple ID. Apparently, you purchased something from the App Store a long time ago, for which you used the non-email form of Apple ID.

In the "Update Your Apple ID" dialog, provide the old form of your Apple ID – the one provided in the App Store dialog box. Determine if that leads to a solution for you.

Thanks everyone.  You are right it is a complicated issue.  Apple is on it, they have been very nice.  Thanks again for all your input.

    Hi,

I had this once when I thought I had cancelled a download that was fairly big so I could Shut Down on the evening concerned.

I eventually used Launch Pad to show me the item that was downloading/updating.

I found the same in the Applications folder as well.

Deleting it stopped the pop ups.
