Q: iMessage Yahoo account not syncing across Macbook/iPhone

I'm trying to communicate with a friend of mine who is on Windows. She is using Yahoo Messenger. I have an iPhone 6s running iOS 9.3.3 and a MacBook Air on El Capitan. I was able to set up my Yahoo account in Messages on the MacBook and exchange messages. However, none of those messages are coming through on the iPhone. I have the yahoo account for them set up as one of my send/receive addresses, I've tried to send her messages with that account set as the default send iMessage account (she didn't receive any of them), I've reset all my network settings on the iPhone, I've logged out and logged back in of all accounts on both devices, and nothing is making my iPhone connect with any messages coming from the Yahoo account in iMessage.

All the questions I've seen vaguely related to this are at least two years old and mostly involve logging out and logging back in again. Does anyone have any insight?

    Hi,

The iPhone can do iMessages and SMS to non Apple devices (and Apple devices no doing iMessages).

You have to get separate app for AIM, Jabber (Google) and Yahoo to match the ability of the Messages app on the Mac.

Both version are working as expected.

I'm confused. I'm trying to send and receive messages through iMessage on my iPhone, but they're not going through even though I have the Yahoo account set up for them. They do come through on my MacBook, just not on the iPhone. I'd rather use iMessage than the Yahoo Messenger app.

    Hi,

Is the Yahoo ID also your Apple ID ?

Or is it an additional email you have added as a contact ID ?

Adding it as the second option will not make the Yahoo App messages used anywhere else (i.e. Yahoo messages sent using the Yahoo service) appear in an iMessages account.

If it is the Apple ID as well this still will not make messages others are sending to you from the Yahoo Service appear in iMessages.

We have to go back a while to look at when the ability to use the Yahoo service was added to iChat at iChat 6.

It was  there in Messages 7 in Mountain Lion and has been there ever since.

In the mean time Yahoo have dropped support from the Yahoo for Mac App and in Yosemite and El Capitan it does not work.

Messages on the Mac can join 4 external services:-

    AIM

    Jabber which includes Google.

    Yahoo and

    iMessages.

(It can also join a LAN with other Macs using Bonjour)

Apple IDs issued by Apple can also be valid AIM Screen Names (@Mac.com, @me.com linked to iCloud.com and @icloud.com ones themselves).

These get added as AIM Screen Names in Messages.

    AIM_Screen_Names.png

This one happens to be different from the Apple ID I use in iMessages but can be the same and use both services independently.

If you happen to have a Google ID as your Apple ID  and therefore your iMessages ID it too can be added as a Jabber account.

It's the second situation- the Yahoo address is an additional email I have added as a contact ID.

I do not use the Yahoo Instant Messenger web or phone app, just the iMessage on my laptop with the Yahoo account turned online, and the messages come through just fine there.

They are not received and cannot be sent on iMessage on my iPhone- it's like they don't exist at all on the phone. I've reset all the phone's network settings, removed and re-set-up the Yahoo account, and it still won't work.

So is there no way to make this work in iOS on my phone?

    Hi,

... just the iMessage on my laptop with the Yahoo account turned online, and the messages come through just fine there.

So like my picture above you have one for Yahoo (the Purple one)

If this is the case then the Yahoo side of Messages (nothing to do with iMessages at this point) is working as a Yahoo client (An app that can do Yahoo messaging).

    If ...

the Yahoo address is an additional email I have added as a contact ID.

you will get iMessages but only if someone is using iMessages and using this ID  (Almost as if it were an Apple ID).

These things above are on the Mac.

The Main Window may provide the actual info.

The bottom line on the left where you enter text will tell you what account is being used.

This one is Jabber (using a Google account)

If it says Yahoo because the other end is using either a Yahoo app or the Yahoo Messenger web site then it will not show up on your iPhone (unless you get the Yahoo app)
