Q: Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update could not complete.

Hi there.

Got myself a brand new Mac Pro recently and am loving it. Hooked up my old TB display that went unused for a few months cause the All-In-One cable is busted. No big deal, I bought myself a TB cable and used that to hook it up and it works great.

That is, until I went into the App Store and noticed a firmware update for the display among all the other system updated. I didn't think anything of it at the time and just continued to download and install all the updates in bulk. Well, after all was said and done I got the popup saying it couldn't apply the update to the display since it needs to run through the all-in-one cable to do so. Not a problem I thought, it's not that important to me it gets installed. But now after every time I reboot the machine I get the same annoying popup in my face, no matter what I try to do to remove it. I'm fine with not getting the update, I just want this friggin popup to go away!

I'm a pretty advanced user so I'm not against running terminal commands and/or editing plists or what have you to resolve this issue. I just don't know where to look and I figured this would be my last ditch effort in fixing it before I say screw it, wipe the system and start fresh. So any insight into this would be helpful. Thank you.

    from Apple doc:

Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2: Keeps reappearing and Thunderbolt ports and Target Display Mode may not work

After installing Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2:

    • Thunderbolt ports may not work.
    • Target Display Mode may no longer work.
    • The update may keep reappearing as available for download.

This occurs when a self-powered Thunderbolt device (other than a directly-connected Thunderbolt display) is connected to a Thunderbolt port while installing the update. To resolve this issue:

    1. Shutdown your computer.
    2. Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. If you are using a Mac mini with a Thunderbolt display, reconnect the Thunderbolt display directly to your computer via the Thunderbolt port. Do not connect other Thunderbolt devices at this time.
    5. Restart your computer.
    6. If the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 is offered, download and install it and restart your computer when asked. If the Thunderbolt Update is not offered, the update has installed correctly.
    7. Reconnect all Thunderbolt devices.

I have a similar problem as @ND.PEACHMAC. I did not have a problem with the cables but anyway a message after login says that the firmware update could not complete. The solution proposed by Smokerz did not work.

I have noticed that the problem happens with each login not every startup. Furthermore, running the application directly emits the message that "All thunderbolt displays are up to date". So it is really annoying and confusing. Is there a way to know which applications are launched after login?
