Q: 9.3.3

Hello everyone,

Updated my Ipad Mini2 last night to 9.3.3.   Now, neither of my Macs can sync since they require a ITunes 12.4 but my Macs cant take this so I cannot sync or  backup (both running Macs on 10.6.8 but still syncing fine up until now).

Contacted Apple support who tell me I need another computer but wont admit that IOS 9.3.3.3 has effectively trashed my ability to sync.

Here's the transcript......

Hi, my name is Amber. It'll be just a moment while I review the comments you provided.

Amber:

Hello XXX . Your case number today is # 118xxxx. If for any reason we would get interrupted, please chat us back using the RECONNECT option in the Chat window. You may also reach us at https://getsupport.apple.com/GetCaseDetails.action with your Case ID number. I see that you are chatting in today about device not seen in itunes , is that right?

Me

Updated iPad Mini2 to software 9.3.3…. Itunes on Mac will not recognise so I cant sync or back up and ITunes is up to date version.

Me

Apple update seems to have messed up my Ipad

Me

Itunes on Mac is up to date

Amber:

I am sorry to hear that !

Me

So what do you recommend to fix the problem?

Amber:

Give me just a moment and I will research that for you.

Amber:

Ok, what I would like you to do is to try a different port on your computer please.

Me

OK tried that

Amber:

Ok, have you tried to Ok, what iOS is your Mac please?

Me

yes tried that....Mac is OSX10.6.8 but has worked fine until the IOS 9.3.3 update

Amber:

Ok, what I would need you to do is to try a different computer. What is going on is your mac is an older version and iTunes will only update so far. The iTunes that we need is 12.4.2

Me

Image Capture loads when Ipad is plugged in so the MAc sees the Ipad I guess....Itunes doesn't load it asa source device so I cant back up or sync

Me

I just downloaded latest Itunes from Itunes .com site which is 11.4....the same as on my MAc

Amber:

Yes, However that is not the most up to date iTunes, we would need you to use another computer, the Mac that you are using is an older Mac. That could be the reason that the iPad is not syncing

Me

OK ....just plugged it into my MAcbook (also 10.6.8) and same problem........does that mean Apple has effectively trashed my IPad, MAc Mini and Macbook all with one IOS 9.3.3 update???

Me

because I dont have another computer to plug my Ipad into

Amber:

No sir, the Mac that is a 10.6.8 is an older version and it is not going to be able to update the latest version of iTunes and that is what we will need for the iTunes to recognize the iPad.

Me

Well OK.....but I dont have another computer....so Apple has released an IOS update that has disabled my older computer

Amber:

No sir, it hasn’t disabled it, but when you updated the iPad, that is a newer version so it is not going to recognize and older version.

Me

So if I dont have a third and newer computer, and cannot load iTunes12 how do I fix this sync problem??my

Amber:

You would have to use another computer, maybe a Pc and restore it back to the oder version and then your Mac and the older version of iTunes would be able to recognize it

Me

If I reset the Ipad will that work?

Amber:

You can try and reset it back to factory settings

Me

But then the next time I update IOS I will have the same problem??

Amber:

Yes you will, until you get an update on the Mac or a newer one

Me

So Apple has released an IOS (9.3.3) that causes sync problems.....I see from the web that I am not alone by anymeans!!

Amber:

I do apologize sir, an older version is not going to work with a newer version the softwares do not match.

Me

My Macs cannot update from 10.6.8 so your latest IOS release has effectively trashed my capacity to sync my Macs and Ipad has it not?

Amber:

The updates on the devices are not going to match sir. I do apologize. The older versions do not work with the newer versions.

Amber:

Is there anything that I can try to help you trouble shoot today ?

Me

Yes....I think I've just spent the last 30 minutes asking you for a fix but you haven't given me one....I appreciate your apologies and I know this not your fault personally, but Apple has caused a significant problem ....when will we see a new IOS release to fix the problem

Amber:

The new updates do not come out on the Macs I believe until the fall. They have not released the dates yet

Me

I'm asking about a fix for IOS 9.3.3 since that is what has cuased the problem

Amber:

No new updates come out until the Fall

Amber:

Is there anything else that I can assist you with today

Me

So I take your responses as a YES to my statement that Apple has trashed syncing on both of my computers.....I'm sure that the forums will note this with interest and anger!

Amber:

No Sir that is not what I said.

Amber:

Is there anything else that I can assist you with today?

Me

Perhaps not directly....but your inability to provide an effective solution....other than obtaining another computer....implies that my statement is quite correct!!

Amber:

I do apologize sir that is the trouble shooting steps that we would have to do to fix the problem.

Me

Disgraceful Apple!! BUT I appreciate your time!

Amber:

You are welcome.

Amber:

Thank you for allowing me to provide you with a great overall Apple experience today. Again, your case number is 118xxxxx If there is nothing further that I may assist you with, please select “End Chat” from your chat window, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

I think you are taking a major liberty in describing this as a 'great' experience!

Any helpful advice would be appreciated!!

I don't need to read the transcript. The unfortunate situation for you is that you now need to be running Mountain Lion 10.8.5 in order to sync iOS 9 device with iTunes. Actually, it has been that way since iOS 9 was released. I assume that updated from iOS 8.

You may be able to upgrade your OS X, but without knowing which Mac you have, we can't tell.

OS X Mountain Lion system requirements - Apple Support

OS X 10.6.8 is very old now and it hasn't been supported for some time.

Since you don't post your Mac's specs, we have no clue if you can upgrade your OS X version or not and would need a newer Mac.

As Demo has placed a link that will tell you whether or not your Mac can upgrade to a newer OS X version or not.

If your Mac qualifies for an OS X upgrade to OS X10.8.5 Mountain Lion, you can, also, upgrade to the free OS X 10.11.6 El Capitän.

The hardware requirements are the same.

So, you may or may not need a new or "newer", used Mac that qualifies for a new OS X version.

    Hello ai4x4,

You don't need a computer to update iOS. You probably need to connect iPad to WiFi, but you can download the update directly to the iPad. If iPad doesn't have enough free storage, that's a different issue, which you can work around using a computer.

If you can't update your iPad using a computer, you can, certainly, update iOS over a straight WiFi network connection.

Just make sure your iPad has a minimum of, at least 3- 6 GBs of free data storage space on it.

We always recommend the connection to a computer using the latest iTunes as it has proven to be a more reliable method for doing iOS upgrades/updates to Apple iDevices.

You CAN upgrade/update iOS on your iPad over WiFi.

I feel it's a bit riskier to do if you don't have a reliable and very stable data transmission from both your iSP AND your local WiFi network.

    Good Luck!
