Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

Macbook Air A1466 early 2014, just over two years old and I've had the same problems. Initially it was shutting itself down and taking several attempts to restart, so I tried SMC reset and eventually took it to a service centre. Their response: faulty logic board. Cost to replace AUS$900! It worked sporadically for a week, now it won't respond at all. I can't believe Apple are ignoring this widespread problem.

Same problem here, I bought a MBA 1.3 ghz 4gb mid 2013. As of today it's giving RAM beeps, The thing is most of the other laptops are easily repairable and RAM isn't a costly product. So, Why the **** should i pay for the whole Logic board if its just an RAM issue. I am sure Apple service center is gonna charge about $750 for the replacement, in that price i can honestly get an new win-10 laptop. Not sure what to do :/ - Apple u Suck ... Y did u solder the ****** RAM to the Board -_- This is crazy.. :/

the same thing happened with me last week. the MacBook Air was shutting down automatically. I called up apple tech team and they did some troubleshooting which fixed the issue for around 24 hours. After 24 hours, the system did not power up even though the charging light was on. I took it to apple care run by ample technologies in India. they diagnose it quoted 47660 Rupees bill for changing the logic board which they suspect to be the cause of it. Once it is changed, they will diagnose further. Means, they are not sure if it will fix, but they asked me to pay so much amount so that they can diagnose further... am not sure if they are kidding. How on world the logic board goes off and am asked to pay 47k for 62k worth thing, even after which they are not sure if it would work. Seriously it kind of Rip offf...

I have the same issue with mine. Also it happened to my 2007 iMac as well... twice! I've had 2 iPods fail over the course of the years too. Apple uses cheap hardware just like every other mass producer of computers. You are paying for the name, the pretty aluminum case, and a unique software platform (which in my opinion is the only reason to buy Apple products). I just wish they'd step up their hardware game like they have with the software. I refuse to buy new Apple products now. I get them used so when they break there is still money in the budget to repair them. Just a sad reality of being an exclusively Apple user for over a decade now.

2days back i.e., 1st august 2016 i faced the same problem. In the evening i was doing some research , suddenly for some reason i had to go out of the room leaving my MBA onscreen , after returning what i saw was just a black screen. After trying several times i wasn't able to boot it up. Very next day i took it to Apple Store for diagnosis. Moreover the apple service, no words to explain it, they made me wait for 2 hrs and then finally entertained my problem. They took around 2 days to examine that MBA's mother board had issues i.e., it failed . And they gave me a lame reason for that too, that they don't know why it happened. Even they were more into monetary work, and kept on saying that it would cost me ₹45,000 to replace the mother board or else get it repaired from a non-authorised store. These were exactly their wording to me. I'm very much disappointed with APPLE's service and products. I was planning for a ipad and a iphone 6/7 but i guess i should move on , these have no reliability rather it's now just a brand.

And talking about action we should take up!!

Fellas having same problem pls reply., so that we could unite and make APPLE pay for our investments  .

Being from a middle class family i know how hard it was for me to invest this much big amount!..!!

I bought it at 970 dollar for a fine day to hear from Apple care that the logic board failed for no reason and I have to pay 718 dollar again to fix it. What about $970 I paid in first place?? What is the return of this amount? Why did they charge so much if there hardware blows of for no reason? And why should we pay for their scrap?? Highly disappointed. Apple needs to fix their hardware and cover the hardware failures which already happened. Taking up to social media for others to know the fact "what happens after buying Apple products?"  Did not expect such bad experience with Apple. They lost it...

Died after 20 days of warranty period. Apple asks another Rs. 40K (~USD 600) for Motherboard replacement.,

My Macbook Air suddenly stopped functioning after 1 year 20 days. We purchased it for Rs. 72,000 in June 2015. Apple says that it's 'Main Logic Board' (motherboard) needs to be replaced which will cost Rs. 40,000!. All the data is also lost since it wont even start. I am not going to spend another 40K after spending 72K just before a year. Apple can not even diagnose the problem and do a repair. They just give a vague analysis that something is wrong in the MLB, hence it needs to be replaced. It's a white elephant. Purchase only if your data is not crucial and you can afford the protection plan, which is another Rs. 15-16 k and only extends the warranty till 3 years. So, you can purchase this white elephant for about 80-90K, and be in peace for 3 years. And be ready to pay more than 60% the cost of the laptop if anything goes wrong.

My Macbook stopped functioning 20 days after warranty period. I should have looked at this page before spending a hefty amount on this laptop. People, don't go by the name of the 'Apple'. All other companies are making excellent products at much cheaper prices and much lower maintenance. Other laptops can at least be repaired partially. No other computer asks for a full replacement, that too due to some 'unknown' issue.

Same story here. Everything was working fine until suddenly keyboard and trackpad stopped working. The Mac is not even two years old.

I went to Apple Authorized Service Center in Jaipur, India. They just called me to tell the logic board is gone and it will cost about $650. I bought this machine in August 2014 for $850. Why the heck I would invest so much money again?

Machine is working fine with wireless keyboard and mouse. Apple should immediately do something about this.

for any  issue they would conclude to change logic board.. and ask for hefty amount equal to purchasing a new one. for Apple, we are small chunk of people cribbing about this issue. they don't care about this chunk. We should share this post link on our social networks so that other do not fell in this situation. It is then Apple would realize that they should repair the things on chip level instead of asking customer to change the whole. Its like Apple is trying to say.. if you cant afford to medicate your born baby, trash it and give birth to a new one.

This is in regards to the Macbook air I had given for repair to iCare Koramangala, Bangalore. The system was not powering up. Their iCare technician did the diagnosis and said that the MLB is in suspicion and needs to be changed. I was asked to pay Rs 48000 for repair.

I denied the service and took my Macbook to a third party repair company. The technician there powered it ON in seconds with few key combination with a charge of 0 RS. With this it is very clear that there was no issue with the MLB and I was simply asked to pay so huge amount for something which was not at all the concern.

I just got saved from being cheated!!! Service centres should not damage the reputation which Apple has built so long way.

Logic board may not be an issue, but they still insist in changing it stating it as an issue.

I have attached the quotation and the proof of my macbook being in working status.
