Q: Iphone 5s not functioning.

I bought a 5s, the screen cracked and I replaced it. Now all I get is the Apple logo and then the connect to itunes page. The phone cannot be updated or restored due to error code 4013. I have been told by a genius bar member that I now own an expensive paper weight. The firmware has locked me out and nothing can be done. I would hate to think that Apple would prevent me from fixing my own phone in order to buy their insurance or get a new phone. Is there any fix?

If anyone other than Apple replaced the display, you're on your own. Apple does not sell iPhone parts at all. The iPhone is not user serviceable. The only screen you would have been able to obtain to replace yours would have to be stolen, salvaged, or counterfeit.

Apple won't touch it, as you're already aware.

Find a competent 3rd party repair shop or buy a new phone.

Obviously, Apple did not prevent you from attempting to repair your phone. However, it appears your repair was not successful. Apple will not longer support the phone even on an out of warranty basis. You might want to try an independent repair shop or the forums at ifixit.com.

I have been replacing screens for a while. I do not have problems with previous 5s, although I don't know what the IOS was at the time, and I don't have problems with the 6 or 4. Why only the 5s?

Sorry to mislead you on the genius bar reply. We were joking around and he did understand my disappoint when I called my phone a rock. We sort of both came up with the conclusion of paper weight. He added expensive. He also gave his apologies. The exchange we had was pleasant.

I prefer the term NOLOAD (pronounced as no load). No Longer On Active Duty. ;-)

Whether you had problems previously or not is irrelevant.

As you've been told, Apple does not sell iPhone parts. There is no way for you to legitimately get your hands on genuine, known working, Apple parts other than those that have been salvaged.

You took a risk when you decided to try and fix it yourself rather than paying the quite reasonable price to have the display replaced by Apple. You lost.

    Move on.
