Q: Mac is running at a slow crawl

I just retuned back from a vacation and fired up the Mac to start work.

I work editing movies and sending finished projects back and forth to servers.

Anyway I came home to find my mac crawling. Our son has been using it to play games on steam and to run his dungeons and dragons games using a site called roll 20.

He claims he hasn't done anything wrong or downloaded anything strange but its moving incredibly slow.

What can i do to speed it back up to where it was before we left?

it was never lightning fast but when we left moving 37 gigs from our desktop to the external drive would take a few minutes...it now says estimated time 10 hours. while sending files to the external the whole computer has slowed down

thank you for your help

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

You have adware installed. Run the report again and where you see the red Adware, click Remove. Once complete, run the report again and post a copy into a new reply.

If the above doesn't work, download this program which was written by Thomas Reed, a long time poster. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy.

So far I have followed all the instructions offered and while quite a few adware and malware things were removed (thanks very much for the assistance) the main problem still exists. The transfer is still moving at a crawl.

I am currently trying to move a 37Gig folder to an external and its saying its going to take 17 hours! it usually takes a few minutes.

Anyone with any other ideas please let me know. So far my work has ground to a halt while I try to get these movies up to the external.

    thank you ahead of time

It could be USB interference from another device.  For example, was that game controller always plugged in before you left for vacation?

I would start by disconnecting ALL the other USB devices, except the disk you are transferring to.

If that doesn't change the behavior, try different external disk, just as an experiment to see if it is specific to the disk or all of your USB transfers.

Try different USB cables.  Cables have been known to go bad.

Finally, if messing with the USB devices and cables does not change the behavior, then try booting into Safe mode

My son was plugging in his PC keyboard to play because he just can't use the small mac keyboard, so that may be an issue.

since the externals are all plugged in there that may be it.

So you're saying turnoff the computer, unplug all usb's, turn computer back on and replug each and see if it helps?

Also im not sure I understand about serfdom. what should i do once in safe mode?

You do not need to turn off the computer, but if you have external disks you do need to eject the disks before unplugging them.   If find it easier to shutdown and unplug, then that is fine.

For USB testing, just plug in the 1 disk (the one you want to test), and unplug everything you do not absolutely need.  If you normally use a USB keyboard and mouse, then plug in yours, not your son's.  If you use a wireless keyboard, mouse or trackpad, then use them so you have fewer USB devices plugged in.

Now test your file transfer.  If the desired external disk works better with almost nothing else plugged into the USB ports, that would indicate one of the USB devices that were plugged in before is interfering.

If almost nothing plugged into the USB ports does not change your transfer speeds, then try changing the USB cable to your desired external disk.

If changing the cable does not work, try changing which USB port you plug into on the back of your iMac.  Keep trying each one to be sure it is not a port issue.

If changing the USB cable does not work, and changing the USB port does not work, then try using one of your other external disk.  Again, unplug any USB device you do not need for the test.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat with other devices until things go back to normal, or you have identified a device, USB cable, or USB port that is not behaving correctly.

Safe mode, is mostly booting while holding the "Shift" key <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>.  Safe mode does not load any 3rd party additions.  This is a test to see if any of the 3rd party additions are interfering with your file transfers.  It is just an experiment, and Safe mode is not intended as a normal way to run your iMac.  When the Safe mode experiment is over, you just reboot normally.

    Yupo....that was it!

I turned off the mac, turned off the externals, removed the externals from the usb chain and plugged one at the back of the mack, turned it back on and its not sending the files at about 2 gigs a minute. it went from saying ti would take 24 hours to 26 minutes.

    thank you for this.

Now all you need to do is figure out which of the USB devices is interfering.  So more testing by plugging in one device at a time, and testing.
