Q: Strange crash Imac Retina

Hi!

This has happened now a couple of times on my imac 27'' retina 2014 (el capitan, 16gb ram, i7 processor, 1tb fusion drive). Its different colors every time. But it starts as flickering on the screen and after a few seconds this split thing happen. All i can do is press the button until it turns off...

It has happened a few times since i bought it last year, with months inbetween. But now it came 2 times in 4 days.

Searched the internet for answers, and did a hardware test but nothing!!

Does anyone of you know what could be going on? I have a genuis appointment on saturday. What could i expect?

Will they take it for repair or give me a new one or what?

Am in the middle of an audio project (working as a audio engineer) so this is very stressful...

Thanks

Niclas

    Niclas,

Do you have ANY antivirus, cleaning or any third party maintenance app installed on the computer?

Apple will not give you a new computer, if your computer is covered by the original warranty or AppleCare and there is hardware damage then they will replace the offending part(s) and return the computer to you after it has been repaired. If that occurs, when you pick up the computer, please make sure you start it and test it at the Apple Store to verify it is working okay.

If your warranty has lapsed or you did not buy AppleCare and a repair is needed, then you will need to pay for any repairs.

No maintenance apps, no antivirus, nothing.

Any clue to what it could be? Graphics card?

can they check whats wrong with it on the spot or does they send it away?

Why do i need an appointment just to leave it at the store? do they keep spare parts there and can switch as soon as they detect the fault?

I have apple care for two more years. lucky me!

You need an appointment because Apple Stores are extremely busy and without an appointment you may have to wait around for an hour or more before they can fit you in. It's just smart to make and be on-time for your appointment. As far as spare parts, each store is different and it is common to have to send the computer out to a regional repair center for the actual repair. They turn them around pretty quickly but if you have to leave it, expect to be without it for a week or so. Make sure you have backed up the computer prior to leaving it with them. You can ask about all of this when you arrive for your appointment.

Glad you have AppleCare, that was VERY wise.

If you would like, you can run an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

Below is a report from EtreCheck. I ran it once and it discovered Spigot malware from when i installed uTorrent without unchecking the box asking if i wanted yahoo to me my main whatever... grr. thought i got rid of all that... But i dont think it has anything to do with this problem...

After that i used the computer for a while. surfing. listening to music and so on. And then i tried to open up the same Logic Pro X project i was working on. And bam. It went bananas again. It happened when i switched desktop and back again. No crash rapport, nothing. the computer didnt seem to recognize that it crashed...

I opened up another project and that worked fine. I have heard of apps crashing, but this is absurd!

    Niclas,

Uninstall the uTorrent , whenever you use a uTorrent to download software (of any type) that you did not pay for it comes with a price. In the US (I don't know where  you are located) using a Torrent to download any software that wasn't paid for is considered not ethical and in most cases is illegal and comes with severe risks. It is common for software downloaded from a Torrent to come infected with malware.

Also, I see you have Little Snitch installed, this is totally unnecessary and has been the cause for some systems to crash. I would contac the developer and find out the instructions for uninstalling and follow them.

You may want to consider doing an Erase and Install of OS X to start with a clean slate and then manually install your (paid for) apps or apps you have valid licenses for. Also manually restore your data files too.

In short, you have made a bit of a mess with your system. Sorry to be so blunt but most issues with iMacs like yours stem from something the user has done without knowledge of the ramifications.

    Good luck

I dont download or use anything i dont own! Dont be so fast to judge! I have a huge LP/CD collection and it is within my legal rights to download copies of that music to my computer instead of ripping the actual discs (which is very time consuming when it comes to LP..)

Little Snitch let me turn off all internet activity i don't want. And that is very important when dealing with pro audio! I cant be disturbed in the middle of a recording by Google (mostly. **** chrome..) or what ever app that want to get something from me or from the web. I want to say when it is okay. i turn LS off when im not working.

And about that plugin that caused this: I have paid for it (over $500).

So again, dont be so freaking fast to judge. That post was really rude!

Please re-read my post, I did not accuse you of anything other than making a mess of your system, my intention was not to be rude but to point out the potential damage of using Torrents .

However I am glad to hear you solved your problem.

Perhaps contacting the developer that supplied the problem plugin to see if they have ever heard of your problem and if they have an updated version may be a possible solution.

Same issue.  Late 2014 iMac 27" display running El Capitan 10.11.6.  I don't want to upgrade to Sierra yet.  I've had a horrible experience with it on my Macbook.  I've got a video journal of the crashes as I experience them.  This is happening multiple times a day whether I am surfing the web or running Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.  I'm going to erase and reinstall, but what a pain.
