Q: how do I sync new music to my external drive

The first thing we need to do is to is to consolidate your iTunes Media folder. This will ensure all your music is copied to the iTunes Media folder, so when you move the folder to the external drive, all your songs still play. You will need this help article from Apple to do this: Manage and back up your iTunes media library. Once that is done, go ahead and follow the steps in the same article to Find the iTunes Media folder. Click the change button, and change the iTunes media folder location to your external drive. What that does is move all your music and playlist to the external, and tell iTunes to put all new music in the same folder which is now on the external drive.
