Have you setup HomeSharing from iTunes on the computer that is using the external drive as the source for its iTunes Library?

Apple WatchHome Sharing isn't meant to be used with an external drive.

Aug 3, 2016 1:17 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby Phil0124,Actually HomeSharing does not care where the library is physically located. As long as iTunes knows where it is, and can load it, it can be home shared just fine.

Aug 3, 2016 3:51 PM in response to margardenladyby Phil0124,Once you've selected the shared Library on the computer that does not have it, you should get the menu at the bottom of the iTunes screen:
However, you don't need to use the drop down. If you can see the music in iTunes on the computer that does not have it, you can then right click on a song, and then on Import. Or Click on the 3 dots [...] next to the Album title, and click on "Import Album" to copy it over.
This is all from the computer that does not already have the library.
