Q: iPad Air 2 skipping DFU Boot Up sequence

Hello All,

I am an IT associate and we have an iPad who has been giving us some trouble the past couple of days. It was stuck in a boot loop sequence which would flash a red screen and boot loop about 3 times before freezing on the blank white apple logo screen.

I was able to get it into recovery mode and attempt to perform a restore and update on the device, however, when I attempt to go through the process of restoring and updating, I continuously get an error "The iPad 'iPad' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9)"

I researched the error code and i followed these instructions several times. Different USB cables, different USB ports on my MacBook Pro. I tried the iMac at my desk. I even attempted the process on my windows partition through bootcamp. All were unsuccessful and left me with the same error.

I did more research and discovered DFU mode. I have been attempting to perform DFU boot up sequence through a separate set of instructions found on iMore's website here. I follow these instructions completely without fault.

My issue is that whenever i plug in the iPad into any machine, it automatically now goes into recovery mode. I attempt to first hold the power button down for 3 seconds, then the home button for 10 seconds, but before I can even hold the power button down for 3 seconds, the iPad puts itself into recovery mode. I know this is a lengthy and complicated situation, but has anyone else encountered this problem?

DFU mode is very very difficult to get into as the timing is absolutely critical. You are not the only one who has noticed this. I recommend that you continue trying until you get it into DFU, your last alternative other than an Apple Store. Good luck.

I've spent nearly an entire day working on this iPad. My manager is thinking the Apple store is our best bet at this point. Still open to any other suggestions, but thank you!

I admire your patience and drive, but there really is no secret to making DFU work other than the timing of it. If you have truly put an entire day's work into it and you are not having success, you should probably heed the manager's suggestion and take it to an Apple Store. You may also have to consider that you have a hardware problem and no amount of time that you put into trying DFU mode will do any good at all.

Sounds almost as bad as my root canal. Good advice above....
