Q: Apple Super Drive won't play/open mpg2 in SVCD

I've been trying to watch home videos my daughter took of our Grandson which my daughter burned onto a cd in mpg2 SVCD format. I'm using my Apple Super Drive and have iMac with El Capitan on I've tried using iTunes, VLC and QuickTime media players but all to no avail. Also my iMac/Drive doesn't seem to like the cd's with said videos on as no matter how many times I click 'Eject' the drive will not eject cd leaving me to unplug SuperDrive, then plug back in hoping this action will prompt an ejection which it is.

I don't know if its the SuperDrive or cd which is at fault, because said drive will play music cd's and shop bought dvd films. I have been told that Apples superdrive can be 'particular' and awkward in what it plays?

I can also add that I've tried the home videos on our Sony dvd player to play through Sony tv, but again nothing showing on tele. I have have these home videos for quite some time and appreciate they may need converting but if I can't get drive to accept them properly, I'll be unable to do this.

Can anyone help please? thanks
