Q: Safari unable to install any extension

I've about hit my wits end with trying to switch to Safari from Chrome. I'm trying to install a few extensions to Safari, adblock, ghostery, trafficlight, and lastpass.

None of them are installing. I keep getting an error, "Safari is unable to install this extension."

I've tried:

Turning off FileVault

Erasing Keychain node (wasn't one there)

Rebooting into safe mode and attempting install

Rebooting back after safe mode and attempting install

Tried to install direct from developer bypassing extension gallery

Deleting all personal info in Safari

Beyond taking the MacBook into a genius bar, what else can I try?

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You are using Safari/Safari Extensions to install?

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account and see if they will install there.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I guess good job on the copy/paste reply from another topic with a similar problem. Reading my post, you'd notice I've tried that already. I mentioned trying safe boot, and I also mention pulling from both Safari Gallery/Direct from developer. I haven't gotten as far as to uninstall 3rd party apps, but if I have to take off Office and/or reformat to make Safari work..I'd rather take this back to Best Buy and go back to Windows.

I've created a new topic because everything I've tried while digging through these discussions hasn't worked. I'm a network engineer, albeit Windows, for my day job. I don't usually ask for help unless I'm truly stumped.

Sorry for reading your post too fast yesterday. Have you tried creating a new admin account to see if you can install them there?

If you can install them in a new account, try running this program while in your normal account and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I ended up having to reformat the Macbook to fix it. It works now.
