Q: After 10.11.6 Xerox Phaser is 'not connected'

I have tried deleting and readding it, turning the firewall off and on, none of it makes a difference.  Help!

Last week I updated to 10.11.6 of El Capitan.  A printer I could print to the prior day I can no longer print to.  Now I just get the error message that it is 'not connected', however, if I go to the printer in system preference, I can see the supply levels, so that does work.  I tried deleting and readding it, deleting and readding all printers, adding it as an IP address, turning the firewall off - none of it makes any difference.  Help.

    ann804,

Please follow Apple's troubleshooting steps in Resolve printer issues on your Mac - Apple Support. My guess, is the iMac needs a Printer Reset. This is pretty simple to do:

Reset Printing System in OS X

    1. Launch System Preferences by selecting it from the Apple menu, or by clicking its icon in the Dock.
    2. Select the Print & Scan preference pane.
    3. Right-click in a blank area of the printer list sidebar, then select Reset Printing System in the pop-up menu.\
    4. After the reset, then re-install the printer.

If this does not help, please advise how the device is connected, i.e. USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth etc....

I have already done that and it made no difference.  The printer is connected via ethernet.

Okay then please follow these steps to connect it using the printer's IP address.

I did that.  I can click on the printer and see the supply levels.  But I try to print to it and it says 'The printer is not responding."

    Okay,

    1. Restart the printer
    2. Restart the computer and while doing so do a PRAM reset per iMac SMC and PRAM reset.
    3. Then after the computer fully restarts, try to print.

If the printer fails to print:

    • then reset the printing system again
    • Re-add the printer using the IP address method.

Did that and it did not help.  I have also now found that the Canon Print Pro utility inside photoshop (that worked before) now does not see the Canon printer I have.  But it can be added and the supply levels show up fine.  This is very frustrating.  should I drop back to 10.11.5 and how do I do that.  I don't have any more time to waste.

I suspect it has something to do with your installation, not OS X! Please provide an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

Well I see some serious issues with your system. First is you have some adware installed, look at your report and locate that section and click where it says to remove. Then re-run the report and see if the adware has been removed.

I also see your startup drive is dangerously full which means your system may become unable to startup if you don't move some data files to either your internal HD or an external HD.

Finally I see you have a large number of plugins installed on your system, this means your system may have out-of-date plugs ins installed.

OK but would any of that cause the printers to not print.  They printed fine the day before I installed 10.11.6.  I will do those things and rerun it but I BET you a smiley face it does not fix it.
