Jul 27, 2016 6:03 AM in response to jabeard83by Limnos,My experience with Time Machine is limited and only with Mavericks. I know others have said it restores the operating system but I just checked my Time Machine drive and it does not have a complete operating system stored on it. You may need to install your operating system first.
I used to run Tiger OS until last January. I never once in 10 years of running it ever re-installed the operating system. Now while I get the impression that Apple's past 5 years of system versions have become somewhat shoddy I don't think we have reached the stage where a complete erase of a drive is called for when there are system problems. You kind of burned down the house to take care of a loose door hinge. Anyway, you have done it now but it was kind of a Windows-ish approach to dealing with the problem.

Jul 28, 2016 8:10 AM in response to jabeard83by Limnos,I trying to restore it from a time machine backup from my other Mac
I wonder if this this is where the problem lies. This is the backup you did for a different computer?

Aug 4, 2016 10:33 PM in response to jabeard83by jabeard83,So it turns out that there backing up from a different computer is the problem, either is the fact that I did a complete wipe of the system. It was my hard drive, it was buggered and wouldn't allow anything to be installed on it and hence why it kept freezing and crashing.
I have now replaced it and its all good.
Thanks
