Q: Preview 8.1 in El Capitan keeps crashing

Whenever I try to open an image in Preview, it crashes immediately.  This has been happening for several weeks now.  When I look at the crash report it references Preview 8.1 as having the issue.  When I right click on an image on my desktop and tell it to open with Preview 8.0, I don't have a problem.

Is there a way to make Preview 8.0 my default for opening images?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi Janeen, please log in to another user account or create one and test. Does the problem still occur?

    Hi Macjack,

I logged into a guest account and opened an image using preview (8.1) without a problem.  Does this mean there is some sort of glitch with my account?

Yes, to begin with why do you have the 8.0 app in the first place. Move 8.0 from your Applications folder(Or wherever it is) to Trash.

    Then, go to ~/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist

If you need to show the hidden home Library, in Finder "Go"menu > Hold the option key and Choose Library > Preferences > com.apple.Preview.plist Move that file to the desktop. Then log out or back in or restart.

    Do a backup.

    Quit Preview.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Remove the following. You may not find them all. Restart and test.

    Containers/com.apple.Preview

    Containers/com.apple.quicklook.ui.helper

    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist

    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist

    Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState

Preview 8.0 only appears on the right click menu as a "open with" option.  I tried your advice but it did not work for me.

That sounds like the problem, the item in the context menu. Let's rebuild your LaunchServices data base to get rid of that entry.

Launch Terminal from your Applications folder.

Triple click anywhere on this line to copy entire line then

at the prompt copy & paste this command:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -seed -domain local -domain system -domain user
