Q: Images/stills turn black in iMovie since El Capitan upgrade

Dear all,

Since I've upgraded to El Capitan, I'm having issues with images/stills in iMovie. While they do show up correctly as thumbnails in the project overview, they can't be previewed or rendered, turning up completely black instead. Audio/text overlays are all OK, the images are just black, all of them.

I've tried various image format (PNG, JPG, TIFF). I've also tried renaming images to some unique name (as suggested somewhere).

Older iMovie projects which I made before El Capitan, that used to be OK, now have the same problem. I can't include any stills.

The issue also occurs when creating a freeze frame ("Add Freeze Frame"): the freeze frame also becomes black when previewing / exporting.

My platforms:

OS X: El Capitan 10.11

iMovie: 8.0.6. (821)

Any help would be appreciated!

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11), iMovie 8.0.6

Johann Beda's solution (link) worked for me. Only thing that did - resizing images does not work. That script worked well it turns your selected images into a short quicktime clip which you can then import into your imovie 09 project.

    thanks

I spent about an hour and a half with customer support, no help, no solution, no code to update your software.  really disappointing.

Hi Rich, I've read through all these threads and you seem very knowledgeable and I'm at my wits end! Hoping you can give me some advice.
I have an old iMac, 2009 or older...not sure. Recently my husband tried to surprise me while I was away and had an SSD Hard Drive installed. But unfortunately, the technician also updated the operating system to El Capitan and now all my iMovie 9 projects are without any stills as discussed in this thread.
I installed iMovie 10.1.2 but after trying numerous times and waiting all night it continues to freeze while attempting to update my events and projects (which are on an external hard drive). Do you have any suggestions for me on how to solve this? It starts out fine updating projects from 2007 up to 2015 but then becomes unresponsive.
I still have iMovie 9 but I've tried some of the suggestions to convert stills by making pdf or reducing size and nothing has worked so far Maybe I've been doing something wrong..any detailed instructions on how to do that would be appreciated! Thanks so much.

For anyone looking for a quick workaround using just a few photos, I found that creating a slideshow for individual photos worked. iMovie seems to only recognize movie files. I'm using iMovie '09 and only needed to use 2 still photos in a movie. I created a slideshow for each one in iPhoto with no text or music and then imported that slideshow movie into iMovie. Just thought I'd share.

THANKS SO MUCH for this idea. I was fuming when I finally upgraded to El Tapicrap from Snow Leopard, thinking things would get better not worse, but to find I couldn't get pics or graphics into projects anymore was quite disgusted. I tried your suggestion quickly twice and this is a decent enough work-around for now, least as far as pics goes. Haven't even tried graphics yet as I wanted to be happy for a moment before I re-hate Apple for such a dismal upgrade in this way.
