Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding you're MacBook Pro is showing a gray screen after being in sleep mode. I want to help get this resolved with you.
You've done a great job with the steps taken so far. At this point I recommend testing this in safe mode. Starting in safe mode prevents Startup and Login Items from automatically opening. Safe mode also allows your Mac to perform certain checks. If the issue doesn't occur in safe mode it's possible a Startup or Login item are the cause. Please follow the steps below to start in safe mode:- Start or restart your Mac.
- Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
- Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.
To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
If the issue persists in safe mode try testing this in another user. This will help determine if specific user files, apps, or settings are causing this issue. Please use the link below to test in another user account and additional steps:

Have a wonderful day!
