Q: Finder -> Share to Mail or Notes does not do anything

I have MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

It used to work before but not sure when it stopped Upgraded to OS X El Capitan when it was launched if upgrade causing the issue.

Details are as follows:

1. Open Finder

2. Right click on a file (an image or text file) and click Share

A list appears as options to share form

3. Clicking on the Mail or Notes or any other option does not do anything

4. After clicking the option, the Finder disables the other options also

And I need to relaunch finder because it stops changing folders and closing the window also.

5. I tried running the following to reset, but did not work

     /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed

Can someone help sort out the issue?

Thanks!

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

    CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

You can skip signing in with your Apple ID unless you want to test iCloud

Only default Apple apps will  be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open other apps you might want to test.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is with your base files.

You can try running the latest Apple combo updater. Often it will fix odd issues.

OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update

    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1885

If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

Try deleting the com.apple.finder.plist in your User's Library/Preferences folder.

Restart then check. You might have to reset some of your preferences after deleting this file.

I tried with a new user and the problem persist with the new user login also.

Should I still try deleting the com.apple.finder.plist from Library/Preferences folder?

I will try install the combo update and post the results again.

Try the combo updater first. If that fails, delete the plist file.

If that fails, you might need to run the full OS X installer over your files.

This has fixed it for others even though the items aren't missing.

Sharing options and Markup are missing after you install OS X Yosemite       also El Capitan

Ok I will try it on my next working day.

By full OS X installer do you mean recovery or reinstallation of complete system?

Eric, in my post #5 is mentioned as "I tried running the following to reset, but did not work"

         /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed

You can download the full installer for OS X El Capitan again in App Store under Purchases tab. It will say you already have it installed but you can select Continue to download the installer. Run this over your drive. While it should not damage or remove any of your files, it's always recommended that you backup first.
