Your backup of the iPad will include the Photos from the camera roll, but not any photos stored in iCoud. Any Photos from iCloud Photo Library or My Photo Stream are not included in the device backup.

which version of iOS are you running on your iPad?  Are you using the Photos.app on the iPad? Then check the "Recently Deleted" album, if the deleted photos are still there. If you emptied the recently deleted album, only restoring from a back up can recover photos.

Look for the "Recently Deleted" Album in the Photos App. Deleted photos are held there for 30 days unless you manually delete them from there as well. There is a restore function there.
