Q: Application Disabled with Cross marked circle around it

I had Parallels application on my Macbook Pro. Suddenly an update alrert came when I was trying to launch parallels. Accidentally I hit YES. It got updated and now I need to enter the activation key again, which I dont have access to.

So, I have tried to restore the app from the timemachine image(just app restoration but not the entire image restoration).

Now I can see the parallels application icon with a gray cicrle crossed on it. I cant launch the parallels. Also I cant get the activation key if I reinstall parallels.

How to repair the restored application?

Also another question is, my timemachine had shown few images of the backups but when I restarted my macbook, I have lost all of my previous timemachine instances.

Now I am in a position only to repair my parallels application, but cant be bale to do it.

Please help me to understand:

1) Why an application gets this crossed circle around it? and how to repair it without reinstalling it.

2) Why I have lost all my TimeMachine images upon restarting the Macbook?

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 2012 model with 16GB RAM and i7

    1) the version of the application is not supported under your current OS.

the current compatible version is V11

if you purchased previous versions the software the serial key may be obtained by contacting them directly.

if you did not have a key you will need to purchase a newer version of the software or restore your computer to a instance where it ran under your OS through Time Machine

    2) are you following Apples instructions? if so what are you seeing

Jimmy, Cant stop thanking you for your VERY IMMEDIATE quickest reply. I am able to get an idea what went wrong.

Sounds like my OSX got upgraded to the latest El Capitan 10.11.6 on july 18 and the subsequent attempt to use parallels(not sure which version is that, still to check) triggered an automatic update alert of parallels I stupidly hit YES. Later tried to bring back the previous version of Parallels(on the new OSX) from the time machine, ran into the current issue.

I am trying to figure out the ways to get back to the last OSX El Capitan version. Any clue?

Beyond my issue, I am very much impressed by the Apple forums very prompt help availability. Thanks again.

This is a typical behaviour of Parallels Desktop: PD 10 runs perfectly well in ElCapitan (PD 9 probably also, I am not sure). But since there is a new version (paid), you get these popups to update, but these "version" updates are not free, but PAID. This means that your earlier Key does not work, you have to buy a new key !

Unacceptable commercial behaviour in my opinion. I have it also from time to time:

    Parallels Desktop 10-11.jpg

it is in French (I am in France just now), but you get it.

You still have the earlier installer I suppose, if not:  you can re-download the version you bought at the Parallels site with the account you made when you bought it.

Uninstall the version you have now, then install the earlier version with the key you have.

Contact Parallels and obtain the key that goes with the copy you bought.

Thank you Lex: You just clarified my understanding. Unfortunately I dont have access to the activation key( The initial configuration and setup was done by a service which doesnt share the account details). So, I am kinda stuck. Tonight I am purchasing new Parallels key with the hope that it would work to activate the newly installed parallels. Next time, I will not upgrade OSX unless and otherwise I want to land into this mess without parallels upgrading. I felt it as a cheating business practice by parallels.

    Thanks again.

    Regards,

Csound, thank you. I have contacted parallels last night and ended up in no use. I must uninstall and install parallels and activate it. I am going to buy a new activation key from Parallels tonight and give a try.

That sort of thing is why I prefer VirtualBox by Oracle, they give it away free, and it is as good as anything else (not as pretty as Parallels though)

"Unfortunately I dont have access to the activation key ( The initial configuration and setup was done by a service which doesnt share the account details)"

But you paid through them for a full Parallels activation key, so they are obliged to give it to you, absolutely unacceptable cheating business of that "service". This is not Parallels problem.

btw the upgrade activation key is about half the price as a new key...

If that service don't want to give you the key, I would start with Virtualbox, as Csound suggests, even if you get the PD key later on.

Csound1: I am with you about the Virtual Box: I usually use this for my distributed computing platform at work(Linux systems. Very nice though). But paralalles is lucarative for home use with the seamless apps usage across OSX and Win10. I guess these pains (of paid license repeatedly, broken vm images etc) are not worth compared to the easeness of Virtual Box etc. Your point is well taken. Thank you.

That service: Its one time machine installation and configuration. I missed to get the licenses included. Any how, I cant go back to that point now. Last night, I bought a new parallels license (OEM) from a seller who bought a new macbook with a free parallels. That seller doesnt want Parallels, I bought it from him and now my parallels is back and working fine(I didnt update it on installation. Its a Parallels CD and activation key, no updates I used from the internet).

Now when I started my Win10 VM, it has updated the Parallels tools and asked me to restart my WIn10 and the Win10 got damaged. Now struggling with this problem: https://forum.parallels.com/threads/windows-7-wont-load-trying-to-boot-from-sata -drive-1.108985/ I am not able to use Windows 10 image that I was usging before.

With all these pains, I am worried if I can continue with the parallels or not. Too many bells and whistles but one breaks another.

I am only here for a minute....

Win 10 and Parallels: there are more threads about it here in this Forum.

But also it is worthwhile to look in Parallels support: http://www.parallels.com/eu/products/desktop/support/
