Q: Macbook Pro. 2 different Free memory readings

My Macbook Pro.10.11.6/ 2012 is a bit slow. It also shows 2 different storage readings. Under Macintosh HD icon on desktop reads 328,82 GB free. But under the menu item 'about this mac' reads 271 GB free. 57 GB difference. Is this why it's a bit slow?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    Hello,

That is a big difference, something that I would try would be to repair & verify your disk. You can do this by following these steps:

    1. Restart your MacBook Pro
    2. When you hear the startup sound, hold down the Command + R key until the apple logo appears
    3. A dialogue will appear, Select Disk Utility
    4. Select your Macintosh HD and under the First Aid tab, Click Repair
    5. After the repair is complete, restart your mac

Hopefully this will fix your issue, Good Luck!

The display that you get in 'about this Mac' is often incorrect due to a bug in the program and should not be relied upon.  Often, but not always, a reindex of Spotlight will correct it:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

The icon should be giving you accurate information

If you want detailed information of what is on your MBP, download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes.

Hi Englishmanincologne, Macs often disagree with themselves over disk space, for more information about the Other category in the Storage display, please see this support article.

There seems to be a bug in the Storage tab.

To see which is correct launch Terminal and at the prompt copy & paste this command:

    df -h

    Press Return key.
