Q: does the apple podcast app keep a history?

I am using the apple podcast app and listen to several kinds of podcasts.  I will set up a podcast before going to bed and set my iPhone to shut down in 30 minutes, before it is done.  In the morning, I will listen to a different podcast on my way to work.  That evening I might want to finish listening to the one from the night before.  But if I listed to several different ones on a long drive during the day, I'm not always sure which one I listened to the night before.  I am hoping there is some listening history in the podcast app that I am missing.  Can anyone help me?

If this is not an option for the apple podcast, are there any recommendations of podcast player apps for iphones/iPads that have a listening history?

Thank you,

Michelle

Select the "Unplayed" option from the bottom toolbar in the Podcasts app. Episodes that have not been played at all are indicated by a blue dot (circle) icon. Those that you started listening to, but did not finish playing, are marked with a half-filled blue dot. That makes them quite easy to spot.

Otherwise, if you sync your podcasts with iTunes on your computer, enable the Last Played column. You'll see the dates the episodes were played on there, and can sort by that date.

    Hello Rysz,

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply.  This is very helpful.  I do sync my podcasts and have added the Last Played column.  Plus, I see on my iPhone where I can see that too.  Again, thank you!

One question, you mention I can sort by the last played column In iTunes on my iMac.  After adding the Last Played column, I see it there but it appears the only sort option is 'Release Date'.  It will not let me sort the list any other way.  The Release Date is in bold and the other columns are not.  When I go to view and look at 'sort by' release date is the only option in the 'drop down' box.  Am I missing another step?  Being able to view by last played would make it so much more effective.

Again, thank you for your help!

[I'm not seeing your second question when I log in, so I'm answering it this way.]

Create a Smart Playlist to include all podcasts (see screenshot below). Now you'll be able to sort by any column. You can also add other criteria to the playlist to narrow down the selection, including Unplayed. Just click on the plus sign.

    Hi Rysz,

I created the new list and appreciate this tool.  When I set it up, the list shows many of the podcasts I've listened to.  However, the one I started last night and did not finish is not showing up.  I listened on my iphone and looked in setings on my iphone and see that I do have sync podcasts turned on.  Do I need to do anything on the iMac end for them to sync into itunes?

EPisodes that you didn't finish playing should not appear in Played smart playlist. They should appear in an Unplayed list. If you're getting unexpected results, check that the rules "make sense."

Automatic syncing is always delayed, often taking place at night. To force a manual sync, connect your device too tunes, select it, then click on the Sync button.
