Q: Deleting photos from iPhone but not iCloud

I know this question has been asked and answered before, but my situation seems slightly different.

I ran out of space on my iPhone, so I uploaded all of my photos from my iPhone to an iPhoto library, and then deleted many of the photos from my iPhone. I am now uploading all photos from the iPhoto library to iCloud Photos. Once that's done, I want to start syncing my iPhone to iCloud Photos (which contains all of the old photos from iPhoto) so that new photos I take show up in iCloud, but I don't want it to delete the old photos that are currently in iCloud but were deleted from my phone. Is that possible?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2

Apple does "supply a simple solution to that - it is called TimeMachine".

Time Machine is NOT a solution. That's a sledgehammer!

The problem is simple and should have a simple, uncomplicated solution. When it comes to photos, Apple offers nothing simple for photo storage and sharing. What everyone appears to want and need -- it's what I want and need -- is one place to permanently store the actual photo files from where mobile devices can access and display but NOT delete. This is not rocket science and something Apple engineering should be able to deliver. However, they keep re-inventing their photo management application without resolving this simple, basic need.

    Why?

The answer is trivial - do not use software you do not like - instead use software that does what you what - simple implementing your solution is so simple I'm sure there are many choices that do what you want - or given that it is so simple just implement it yourself - it is crazy to choose to use software that does not work like you want - just change to one that does exactly what you want - how trivial can something be

Millions and millions of people choose Photos - a few do not - join that small number and then you will be ahppy

There is no solution needed, its a sync service, not storage. And its clearly working correctly for you, but you are using the wrong service for what you want (which would be offline storage without sync) Dropbox will do that.

Yes, I am finding that Apple does not provide the service I am looking for. I have a Dropbox account and use it. It doesn't diminish the problem I have with my iPad and accessing my photos, though. Not really.

I would have been much better had Apple provided a more fully integrated solution for storage and syncing.

For instance, if I take a pic with my iPad (the pic is physically located on my iPad) and it syncs to iCloud so I can share it to my other devices, should I need to remove it from my iPad due to storage constraints I will lose it unless I take an extra step and sync it to some third party storage. While it is a solution that is not a good solution. Apple should be able to allow me to sync to the cloud, delete the original from my iPad, yet still retain access to the photo in the cloud via my iPad. Syncing and storage do not have to be mutually exclusive features.

That's what most of us in this thread seem to be looking for. It's what I am looking for.

Apple supplies that service with iCloud Photo Library - it is the ability to optimize photos (make them smaller) on devices with limited storage)

And you simply do not understand the purpose of ICPL - it is not and never was intended to be a storage service - it is as advertised a syncing service to keep all libraries identical - any change made to any library (addition, deletion or edit) is made to all - that is exactly how a syncing service should (and does) work - if you want a storage service then you need to choose to use a storage service like DropBox rather than choosing to use a syncing service - the fact that you choose to use the incorrect service for your needs does not mean the service is not done correctly - it simply means you made a bad choice

But Apple don't provide that, so you will need to look elsewhere, Dropbox does (along with many others) use one of them

Larry, I realize this is a mostly public forum but please stop responding to me. I am not interested in anything you have to say. It's not helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hey - I too have a request - stop trolling the board with insane posts and learn to make intelligent choices about what software you choose to use  - Thanks in advance

By mostly I meant you need an iTunes account to participate outside of just reading. But he's not helping with his smug and disrespectful responses. You can see from others' responses I'm not the only one who has been put off by him.

That (assuming you are correct) would be your problem, he gave you the correct answer, that you don't like it is not his problem, it is what it is.

You elected to use a wrong service, you can fix that.

    Goodbye.

You got a clear and concise and correct answer to your question and you posted back with crap - and of course as is common you here starting trouble rather than helping - I have helped tens of thousands of people - you have helped no one - you ask for an answer and you got it and rather than appreciate it you choose to start problems - so you need to go away and no one will ever miss you since you have never assisted anytone
