Q: Contact transfer question

I just got an SE and am giving my old 5 to my hubby. I want my contacts to remain on the 5 for him. Once I transfer the phone to him then I want our contact lists to be independent of each other so I can change the way some of his contacts are listed and so I can delete some of my contacts on the 5. I am using my SE now and both the SE and the 5 currently have my contacts.

BTW, I foolishly already deleted and renamed some contacts on the 5 and those changes also showed upon my SE so I had to restore my contacts using iCloud. That makes sense to my dumb brain now since I haven't transferred the 5 to him yet.

Thanks for any help!

This is what I would do.

It's always best if you start by erasing the phone, that way you can be sure you have removed everything you need to. After erasure I'd add your account back and enable only contact syncing in the iCloud settings. Once the contacts have loaded, turn off contact syncing and you should be given the option to keep the contacts on the phone.

Now you can sign out of your account and into his (or create his own account if necessary), when you turn on contact syncing in the settings you should then get an option to merge the contacts.

Now your contacts will be separated, any changes you make in his account won'y affect the contacts on your phone.
