Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

Great solution with the wine cork. Just don't understand why do you need 2 corks? Do the corks last a short time, like the plastic hinges?  Do you have a solution for a beer drinkers, because I don't drink wine. LOL

OK 42 pages of people, having the exact same error happening to there 27" 2013 version. And most of them happening when they are even not in the room. That is the definition of a design error! And think of that for each person finding this post, and writing in 1000 are silent!

Im going to see if I can get it fixed free of charge.

following a previous reply, I've contacted Apple about my case mentioning an existing support case with reference OP1488 in GSX.

After a few minutes talking with Apple support operator, and an internal consulting from imself, he returned with the answer I was expecting to hear: my late 2013 27" imac was illegible for this support case and Apple was going to repair my iMac for free. I got truly satisfied and relieved.

I've took it to the suggested repair Center which told me the repair should take between 3 to 5 days. Fortunately is just the time I'm going be out for vacations so will not miss it

Took my 27" (Late 2013) in today for this issue. Technician said it will be repaired under UK Consumer Law and recorded it as 'Accidental Damage' as there was no other option to record the repair as. He added notes to say the hinge no longer supported the display and there are no signs of damage so will be free of charge.

For the invoice it was recored as £19 for a new hinge and £24 labour but as mentioned it was free to repair and fee was scrapped. 3-5 days wait.

Just for the record 2 members of staff both said they never heard of this issue... The store was in MK, UK.

I have the same problem with my 27" iMac purchased in 2013. I was at my desk not using or touching my iMac when I heard a loud cracking sound. I soon realized my screen was tilting down and wouldn't stay up.

I find it hard to believe that Apple isn't owning up to the problem as it is obviously a design flaw and a frequently recurring issue.

It's not a design flaw, it's a manufacturing flaw, and it is very rare.

You should contact your Apple suport. This issue is known and Apple is assuming the cost of repairing it.

i've just picked up my iMac from the assistance 2 weeks ago and is as good as new.

    regards

Thanks! I will give them a call.

    Funny though....

I recently dropped by my local Apple store and asked a staff member about the issue. I was told that "they had never heard of that happening before", and that I should bring my iMac in for repair.

That's because it is a fairly unusual occurrence. The trouble with forums like these is that to the uneducated eye it seems like a common occurrence. However considering this forum is more like a hospital, a more correct analogy would be visiting a hospital to try to gauge the overall health of a population. Obviously that doesn't work.

You should use the official channel for contacting Apple: by the support web page. Just open a support request and mention in your description the exactly symptoms as you described in this forum and include the reference to this Apple well known support reference - OP1488 in GSX.

After doing that, it did not took more than 5 minutes to receive a call from Apple.

Picked up my iMac two days ago from my local Service Provider. Repaired free of charge even if the 2 years warranty expired in February. BTW, when I described the issue, both Apple Phone Support and the local Service Provider knew exactly what I was talking about: the service provider said it had already happened at least to another customer. Considering I'm talking about a reseller of a 50000 people town, I guess we could say that's probably a "relatively" unusual issue but not a "so unusual" issue..,

Well, this just happened to me too, tonight. I went out to dinner w/ my husband, came back, and found the display of my late-2013 27" iMac tilted all the forward and loose. Right now, I have a heavy object behind the display preventing the tilt so I can work, but I'll be calling Support in the morning.

Apple, you can add yet another late-2013 27" iMac, purchased new in 2013, to your display stand manufacturer defect list.

Exactly the same thing happened to my late 2013 iMac -- was in the room but not near the computer -- a snap, and it tilted forward. I live far out in the country, two hours from the nearest Apple store, no Apple Care, so the wood letter-opener wedged up in the hinge will have to do for now. I work on this machine and can't do without it.

I wonder how many in the US have had the flaw fixed for no charge?

Try contacting Apple and referencing the info JoPPt mentions in the 3rd post before yours. This has been referenced by others in this thread as an excellent way to cut through the red tape.

This literally just happened to my iMac (27-inch, Late 2012). Sitting on the sofa and heard a loud crack - couldn't find the source of the noise until I came to use my Mac the next day. I would agree  - a design flaw
