Q: Black screen / display issues

I have a MBPR13" (early 2015) which i believe has integrated intel 6100 graphics.

I've been running windows via bootcamp on this mac since i bought it, first with win8.1 and for the last year or so, win10. A couple of weeks ago though, windows crashed and wouldn't boot. I could boot in safe mode after 3 failed attempts at normal mode, but i couldn't diagnose the issue. I used the opportunity to undertake a complete fresh install of both OSX and Windows 10.

However, whilst OSX continues to run fine, Windows 10 still won't work. It installs fine, and then gets to the point where the Bootcamp assistant installs all the drivers - it seems to be ok until the display then goes blank - i assume this is the point where the display drivers are installed. Windows is still running, but all i get is a blank screen.

After lots of mucking plugging and unplugging displays about i can occasionally get an image, either on an external monitor or on the integrated display. The laptop display doesn't fill the screen (the bottom 25% of the screen remains  blank), and windows can't detect both displays simultaneously. In all cases, within a few seconds of getting an image up on screen, windows crashes and restarts.

I suspect this is a driver issue, probably related to a recent windows update - note my fresh install is based on the current (as of today) windows 10 ISO download available from microsoft, so i assume this includes all applicable updates and i've no means of rolling back to a previous build.

Can someone from apple please comment on this, hopefully identifying that it's simply a driver issue and updating the bootcamp windows support software for my MBP so i can successfully get Windows back up and running? If not, any other suggestions on a fix?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Update - uninstalling the Intel 6100 display driver temporarily resolves the issue (to a point - the laptop display works again, but obviously without the hardware acceleration or external monitor connectivity), though windows 10 automatically reinstalls the drivers a few seconds later which results in the issue returning.

I've been able to continue to use the laptop only by disabling the display adapter. However this clearly isn't a fix, but merely highlights that the display driver is the issue.

Any comments apple? Surely this affects a lot of users, and not just me? Is a driver update on the way?

The following is not an Apple 'official' comment.

Please see Windows 10 crashing, but not sure why.

Thanks, but that solution doesn't work for me - Apple's drivers cause the same problem as those I get from Windows update. So until Apple put out an updated driver im kinda stuffed.

My only other potential solution that I've thought of - install a previous version of Windows 10 and don't let it update to the version that has the driver clash - anyone know where I can get a previous Version ISO image?

You can install the latest version of W10 and use http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/take-back-control-driver-updates-windows-10/ to disable Intel updates. Typically, Apple BC drivers do not cause a crash. Can you check Bootcamp.xml for Product Version and the Intel GPU driver versions available.

You can create a Windows System Restore point, before you allow any Windows updates and have the ability to return to this state, in case you have a driver update crash your system.

The Intel GPU drivers are the worst-managed pieces in the Microsoft-Apple-Intel triumvirate.

The Apple Bc drivers are causing the problem as well sadly - i don't even have an active network connection when I install the apple Bc drivers and the issue appears towards the end of the installation.

OK i've downloaded the windows support software separately just to see the drivers it proposes using. Info as follows:

    Bootcamp Product Version: 6.0.6136

Intel GPU driver - according to the 'installation_readme.txt' file within the intellvb_Win10 folder which seems to cover all the graphics and audio drivers:

    Release Version: Production Version

    Driver Version: 15.33.37.64.4242

    Package: 508909

    Intel(R) Graphics Driver: 10.18.10.4242

    Intel(R) Display Audio Driver: 6.16.0.3154

    Release Date: June 25, 2015

Is this version currently installed and running? Please create a Windows System Restore point, and check if the latest driver at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=intel+6100 for W10 64-bit will work.

I've tried the latest intel driver and the same problem exists.

I'm wondering if this may actually be a hardware problem - I found I had a previous Win10 ISO (version 1511, ie Win10_1511_2_English_x64.iso) so I tried a fresh install of that, and the problem is still there, even when I don't connect to the internet at all so windows can't update drivers. As with every bootcamp install I try on this machine, the issue goes away (though clearly with limited functionality remaining) when I disable the graphics card driver, and let the machine run off the standard, non-accelerated display driver.

Everything does seem to be running fine in OSX though. Is there anyway I can run some diagnostics from OSX to see if there are any hardware faults?

Unless anyone has any more thoughts?

I worry if it's a hardware fault though as my MacBook is now out of the 1 year warranty - though there was a previous fault which led apple to replace the motherboard a few months ago; is this repair covered by a warranty?

If OS X works properly, but W10 does not, then it is not a Hardware Issue. From the OS X System Report, can you provide the PID/VID/SubSysID of your GPU?

You can try to run Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support .

Since is a 2015 Mac, may I suggest, installing W8.1 as a test. You can download it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO .

I ran the diagnostics and it found no issues

i can't find the PID/VID/SubSys ID of the GPU in the system report; here's the info i can find (minus the display information):

Chipset Model:  Intel Iris Graphics 6100

      Type:    GPU

      Bus:      Built-In

      VRAM (Dynamic, Max):  1536 MB

      Vendor:               Intel (0x8086)

      Device ID:           0x162b

      Revision ID:        0x0009

However i am getting more and more convinced it is a hardware issue - I dug out the original ISO of Windows 8.1 that i used to originally install on this machine when i first purchased it, and installed it fresh. The display issue appeared during installation, before the BC drivers even begun the install. So even the old drivers shipped with windows 8.1 that clearly worked previously, don't work now. The issues remained when i installed the BC drivers.

If W8.1 also has an issue, please run the Diagnostics from the link provided. It is not capable of finding all issues. Take good backups of all your files, and then set up an appointment with a Genius at the closest Apple Store or AASP.

I decided to temporarily live with the issue and ignore bootcamp for the timebeing. However last week, the internal laptop display stopped working completely in OSX - it was not even detected. External displays still worked.

Took it into the Apple Store and they disconnected and reconnected the cable connecting the display - and it worked. Bootcamp now installs fine including drivers. So all sorted!

Glad to see it working. Thanks for posting back. Loose cable may not be detectable using AHT/Apple Diagnostics.
