Q: Target display mode

I have a Hdmi to thunderbolt adapter. I plugged the hdmi cable to my macbook pro and the thunderbolt cable to my Imac. I was wondering if that could work. I want to use my Imac as a display for my macbook

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Apple is EXTREMELY clear in the advice letter you referenced what will work. Please review it. If both your MBP & iMac have Thunderbolt connections then the cable you use is a Thunderbolt cable. If neither machine has a Thunderbolt connection the only hope is that your iMac is a 2009 or 2010 27" iMac. In that case you would use a Mini-Displayport cable.
