Q: Airplay unavailable on Macbook pro?

Just had to reset my airport express to get recognized by my airport extreme (which I have to do every few months). Everything is cool again but now (suddenly) my macbook pro (OS X Yosemite 10.10.5) does not list airplay as an option in sound preferences (just built in) nor in GarageBand (which is what i want to use) preferences. I have been using Airplay with garageband through this macbook pro and the Airport Express for over a year. Now there is no option. Weird thing is that iTunes shows the icon and plays just fine. Quicktime does not. On my desktop upstairs, which the Airport Extreme base station is connected to, airplay shows up just fine on everything. Sigh. I appreciate any advice :-(

    Hello Harold,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. I know how important being able to use AirPlay with your MacBook Pro is to you! If I understand correctly, you are unable to use AirPlay in certain apps that worked in the past on your MacBook Pro since you reset an AirPort Express on your Wi-Fi network. Here is how I would narrow down and resolve your issue:

    1. Since this started happening after a network related issue, I suggest restarting your entire Wi-Fi network and make sure your AirPort devices are up to date as well, then test AirPlay again:

Update the software on your AirPort base station

    2. Next, try running a quick test with the built in Disk Utility tool, as this can correct simple issues like you're experiencing.

Disk Utility (El Capitan): Repair a disk

    3. You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

    Cheers!
