Q: How do I change the fonts colours that I add to my movies?

Hi All,

I have a simple question. I have a swag of VHS tapes that I've had since Adam was a boy. I have been working my way through them and converting them to DVDs. That is probably a lot different to what most people use the software for. I  have been using iMovie HD until it was no longer compatible, then Final Cut Express.

Haven't done any for a while and decided that I should start using Final Cut Pro. After a few days fiddling I am at the stage where I am ready to try and edit a movie that I have done before (not taking any risks). The only thing I can't work out is how to change the colour of whatever font I use. So far all I can use is the colour that comes with the template. I want to change them because I use my own back grounds. A white font against a light background is a bit hard to read.

It wasn't hard to get as far as I have done. One of the more polite things said about it when Apple first released it was that it should have been called iMovie HD Pro. I would not disagree with that.

That's it folks, thanks for any help you can give. If there are any manuals that would be useful any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

ugly_dog

What I forgot last time. Am I correct in assuming that the chapter markers are carried over to iDVD when the project is finished.

    Use this:

The Chapter Markers will go to iDVD from FCP X exports but the the Text will be missing, just retype it in.

    Solved the problem okay :-)

Am interested in this comment "Text will be missing, just retype it in." Will have a go and see what happens.

The Chapters will export to iDVD without text in the holder.

This means that if you type a name for the marker in FCP X, the holder will arrive in iDVD but without the typed name, an empty box.

FYI: as time goes on expect iDVD to have more issues as it no longer is updated with newer operating systems.

Yep. Been wondering about iDVD myself. It hasn't been updated since Adam was a boy. Every so often I Google looking for alternatives to iDVD but, to summarise, get the answers; "try this, try that, but there is really nothing that matches iDVD". Toast usually gets an honourable mention. I do have a disc of DVD Studio Pro somewhere, might see if I can find that and give it a try.

    Cheers Al :-)

iDVD will never be updated. Neither will DVD SP. Although Encore is no longer being developed by Adobe, you can still download it provided you're a CC subscriber.

I believe there's an install issue with DVDSP in the current OS, so unless you already have it installed on a system, I don't think it's any longer an option. iDVD keeps chugging on. Reports say it works in Sierra.

Although I do have DVD SP on 10.11I don't recall whether it was installed from the install disk.  I'll uninstall later and see whether it will install properly.

@Tom: Installed DVD Studio Pro from a disk image and it installed OK and a short build test worked. However, to save time, I did not install the content. So I can't verify full menu functionality.

To be quite honest I am more than happy to keep using iDVD. What keeps me awake at night is that Apple will, as they usually do in situations such as this, just make iDVD incompatible with a new O/S update and I will be stuck. I would still be using iMovie HD if i could.

I suppose the main thing that keeps iDVD safe is that Apple has no obvious alternative. They had that alternative with iMovie HD in Final Cut Express. I can remember reading on these forums a suggestion that the reason they dispensed with iMovie HD is that the sales of Final Cut Express were not as good as they would have liked.

Doesn't say much for Final Cut Pro X if you have to re-enter the Chapter Marker texts in iDVD as well as FCP X. Don't have to do that with iMovie HD or Final Cut Express.

AApple simply is not interested in DVD production. It's only happenstance that keeps iDVD alive because it sits pn the same underlying structure used by QuickTime. It has always had problems with some anamorphic formats that postdate it and will have more problems as formats change and QT is dropped. The reason iMovie HD was scraped was because its interface limitations. It had to be rewritten to be 64-bit and there was no point at all in using its very poorly designed interface In the rewrite.
