Q: Strategy for reloading appropriate MacOS, 2008 MacPro 3.0
I recently purchased an early 2008 MacPro (3.0Ghz) at a surplus sale.
The hard drive has been wiped, and no MacOS Install discs were included; so I need operating software to run it.
What is my best strategy for loading software for this machine? Is there a certain version of MacOS that I need to initially load?
When I start up the mac while holding down the Command+R keys, there appears to be an accessible partition named "Mac OS X Base System" under the directory of disk1. Is this some sort of pathway to reinstalling a certain version of operating software?
Thank you,
JeffroBro
P.S. I have also purchased a 2009 MacPro 2.66Ghz with a similar situation (wiped hard drive, no software disk). What is my best approach at loading the appropriate MacOS for this machine? Thank you.

Did you try selecting that to start from?

You could buy a10.6 DVD from the Apple Store & once installed & updated to 10.6.8 you can upgtade further.
Pre-Installed MacOS:X 10.5.6 (9G3553)Maximum MacOS:X 10.11.x*
Same Disc should work on both.
It looks like they might still have it...
