Q: Apple TV4 Not Staying Connected to Internet After Sleep

Say I'm watching something at night and it's time to go to bed. I'll put Apple Tv to sleep then go to bed.

Next day when I turn Apple TV back on, nothing will load and I have to restart my network.

I have Xfinity wifi in house and I use an Airport Express downstairs for my Apple TV which is connected to the Airport via ethernet cable.

What I have to do EVERY DAY is disconnect/reconnect power to my Airport and then my Apple TV will be online again. None of my other devices using the network are experiencing any problems with the network.

What can I do to keep my connection in place and not have to constantly restart my network?

TIA

Apple TV, iOS 9.3.4

So the express is working in what apple calls client mode.. or what we would call wireless to ethernet bridge.

ie it is connected to the Xfinity by wireless.. and is then plugged to the appleTV.

The problem with this setup might have issues due to the bonjour sleep proxy.

What model Express running what firmware?

I can check the model and firmware when I get home from work. However, it may be helpful for me to mention that I recently removed the ethernet cable (because I moved the furniture and never put the wire back) and am still having the same problem.

The reason I introduced the ethernet cable to begin with is because I use the Express to play audio through my stereo and the cable was a solution to audio "lag" when streaming video.

    It now makes no sense..

You will need to give me the picture of the whole network because the without ethernet this setup is impossible.

As mentioned, I disconnected the ethernet cable and now the Apple TV connects to the Airport via wifi. But that did not make a difference in the connection being lost after putting the ATV to sleep.

As far as the audio is concerned, I'll Airplay the audio from ATV to the Express and the sound comes out of my stereo. I was experiencing an audio lag (sound and video out of sync) when doing this. I found a solution online to introduce the ethernet cable between ATV and Express. Oddly enough, I'm not having that problem anymore now that I've removed the ethernet.

Alas, that's not what this post is concerned with.

Hope this diagram helps get an idea, and thanks so much for the responses thus far.

Your diagram is excellent.. helps no end.

AFAIK.. and I have been doing it for a while.. using wireless via the Express as a repeater will not work. Apple deliberately made that setup impossible.

Ethernet link from Express to the Apple TV is possible.

    Wifi link is not possible.

Please remove the Express from the network. Can you run the Apple TV directly from Xfinity router wifi.. and plug the stereo directly into the Apple TV.

The Apple TV is in range of the Xfinity router, so yes I can remove the Express from the network and ATV will function. I will try this tonight and see if the problem persists or is solved.

The entire reason I have the Express is for the sound function, turning my older (expensive) stereo into an Airplay-able device. The whole setup works great, aside from the need to hard reset everyday.

I cannnot plug the stereo directly into ATV.

I cannnot plug the stereo directly into ATV.

That is a shame. Might it be possible to buy an adapter of some sort??

It might still be possible to use the Express but not connected to the ATV.. use it just the same as the ATV although by ethernet would be better directly to the Xfinity.

Tell me how your experiments go.

Well I feel embarrassed. The ethernet wire was plugged in after all. I thought I forgot to plug it back in but I guess not.

So I removed it and it did solve the problem.

I looked into the Airport Utilities and I was under the impression that my Express was a relay for my existing wifi, but it was not. It is simply connected to the network and therefore able to be used via Airplay to my stereo. I was considering using the Express as a guest wifi in the house, and set it up as it's own network, but was not sure how to set that up.

Good to hear.. otherwise your setup would be totally illogical.. as it is, with voodoo infested wireless, it is merely typical gremlin filled wireless.
