Q: Why will my MacMini running El Capitan (10.11.6) only allow one user to log in?

I can add another user but it won’t log in to that other user nor show it on the log in screen.

The MacMini was running as a server (Snow Leopard). Apple genius just did a clean network install, I hoped to repair the problem. They reformatted twice.

MacMini (Late 2009) 2 x 500 Gb, RAID 1.

The log in window setting is set as a list of names. I also tried as a user and password. No luck either way. I can see the other account also when I share into the mac mini from my MacBook.

THe Mac mini will not allow me to enter recovery mode with cmd -r on restart. That is my next problem.

How do I restart into recovery mode when cmd -r doesn't work?

Could be that you do not have a Recovery partition and that is preventing yo from booting to that partition.

However, if you are using a wireless KB try a wired one since sometimes yo can't enter Recovery with a wireless KB.

To get to essentially Recovery mode I would download the El Capitan installer from your Purchases section of the Mac App Store and make a bootable USB device using

    http://liondiskmaker.com/

then boot from that USB device
