Q: Can't launch  Apple Remote Desktop anymore

Hi All,

All the sudden, I can't launch ARD 3.8 (380A95) in El Capitan 11.11.4 anymore.

Every time I try to launch it on one of my Mac, I get a warning telling me that it failed to start "due to an unexpected error" (The Remote Desktop software may not be installed correctly or the computer may require a restart).

It affects all user accounts (so it's not a corrupted user pref) and reinstalling the entire system through the full installer doesn't help.

I can use the Screen Sharing app though…

After reading an old thread with similar problem (Remote desktop administrator software failed to start) I tried deleting all preferences and support files following the instructions on the Apple kb page but it didn't help.

I also checked the Console, and it reports:

3/22/16 10:02:46.888 AM Remote Desktop[5905]: OpenConnectionToAgent - unable to connect 2

3/22/16 10:16:36.035 AM ARDAgent[6057]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 400: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000/C/ modes[2]=0700: Permission denied

3/22/16 10:16:36.035 AM ARDAgent[6057]: confstr on _CS_DARWIN_USER_CACHE_DIR returned an error.

Which could indicate a problem with sandboxing, but again, I see warning similar to this one with different apps on different computers without any consequences (I suspect sandboxing makes the logging fairly chatty nowadays). I checked the cache folder it was referring to and didn't notice anything out of place or missing (comparing to another computer where ARD is working).

If anyone has a suggestion… I'd be forever grateful

Eventually we should only have emptied the /var/folders/zz folder and not removed or renamed. I did the same as you.

Interesting to know that even a Apple's Time Machine didn't work here either.

There is another thread that deals with the same issue because a CCC restore doesn't help here either: https://discussions.apple.com/message/30473108#30473108

I was getting the same error in Console

    3/22/16 10:16:36.035 AM ARDAgent[6057]: libcoreservices: _dirhelper: 400: mkdir: path=/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000/C/ modes[2]=0700: Permission denied

But I decided to go a more conservative route. I noticed that on my other machines that directory had different permissions. I logged enabled root and logged in as root in terminal. Then I set the permissions on that directory to match those on the machine ARD is working on.

    chmod 751 /var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000

So far that is working for me.

Aren't those folders SIP protected ?

For me the issue happened after a disk crash and a restore from Time Machine.

I'm sure TM is bug free and I am doing smth stupid. Yea right.

But in the end I chose to go with a clean ElCap image.

The folders are SIP-protected indeed, but you can do everything and anything from the recovery partition, using the Terminal there.

(now you can do a lot of damage from there too :-> )

Running 10.10.5 and recently started getting the Remote Desktop error as others here have experienced.

Tried reinstalling Remote Desktop 3.8 from App store.... did not fix error

Tried removing /var/folders/zz as suggested... did not fix error

Tried reinstalling ARD Agent (Download Apple Remote Desktop 3.8.5.1 Client)... did not fix error

    What did work for me:

    Delete Remote Desktop application

    Delete System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/

    -then

Reinstall Remote Desktop 3.8 from App Store

    Reinstall Remote Desktop Client 3.8.5.1

Although I lost all of the saved logins to all 84 machines, ARD successfully launched and asked to reset the Admin Password.

    Working as expected now.
