Q: YouTube not working in Safari

10.11.6

iMac 4K, Late 2015.

YouTube simply refuses to play the majority of videos (but not all videos), when using SafariScreen Shot 2016-08-11 at 12.22.52 PM.png. It gives me the "loading dots" infinitely. The same videos play in Chrome without issue.

The exact same issue occurs on my Macbook Pro 13", late 2014.  I've tried uninstalling Flash, re-installing... Clearing all Flash data entirely... disabling all extensions in Safari, clearing Safari browsing history. Nothing helps.

Your version of Flash may be out of date, navigate to www.adobe.com and install the most up-to-date version. If that does not help then reset Safari per the directions in https://www.macissues.com/2015/06/22/how-to-fully-reset-safari-on-your-mac/

If that does not help then please post an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

Thanks for your response. I have already completely uninstalled Flash and then installed the newest version. It didn't change anything.

I'm also wary to immediately do a complete reset of Safari, with all of my saved passwords, etc, for work.

It's happening on my Macbook Pro & my iMac... is there any way my Safari settings would be completely carried across both systems, causing this error?

Please re-read my post regarding EtreCheck if you don't want to reset Safari. The issue is specific to your system(s), YouTube works perfectly on my systems (iMac, MM, MB Air), all have up-to-date versions of Flash and I don't use Chrome, only Safari.

Not to butt in however, aside from the fact you are running too many apps at once and you have some "junk" installed you shouldn't, I just want to mention YouTube has just about switched everything over to HTML5 and wouldn't require flash at all. Carry on.

Thanks for the report. It uncovers some troubling information. First is you have CleanMyMac installed, CMM is considered malware and should be uninstalled per the developers instructions. Antivirus, cleaning and ALL other third party maintenance utilities are not only unnecessary they are potentially dangerous to OS X. If OS X is kept up-to-date that is normally all that is necessary.

Next, I see you have a Torrent app installed. I am not pointing the finger at you (or any Torrent user for that matter), however if you use a Torrent to download apps or other software you did not pay for this is also potentially very dangerous as many have malware attached. Not viruses (none exist for OS X), however there is a small amount of malware out there, using a little common sense they can easily be avoided, such as downloading from an unknown or untrusted site.

Finally, your system is starved for RAM, the ONLY solution to this on a current 21.5" iMac is to reduce the amount of running apps. If your habit is to have many tabs open in your browswer that can be a major use of available RAM. Unfortunately current 21.5" iMacs cannot have the RAM upgraded as the RAM is soldered to the main logic board and taking apart a iMac is MAJOR surgery.

    Thanks for your insight.

I still don't see how RAM or a Torrent app could cause videos to not play in Safari, but play perfectly fine in Chrome. I just tested this on my girlfriends Macbook Pro and the same issue exists there.

I've now uninstalled CMM and the issue persists.

    *update

I have also now done everything listed in the Safari reset procedure. No change...

It's worth noting that about half or more of the videos on YouTube exhibit this problem, although not every single video, in Safari.. and the commercials the play before some videos always play perfectly (isn't that funny).

It's very unusual two different computers would have the same exact problem. Try rebooting the router.

I've tried that to no avail. It's actually a brand new router as well.  We just moved here and this same issue was occurring at the last house, on different internet.

Run another EtreCheck report and scan it to see if any portion (ANY!!) of CMM is left. If it is, then remove it and empty your TRASH. The restart the computer in Safe Mode which will clear some caches. Then restart normally and retest and also re-download the most up-to-date version of Flash.

If your problem persists and you do download apps or other software you did not pay for, it is possible you have infected your system somehow.

Insufficient RAM can cause issues like you are experiencing, so please don't rule that out.

If all else fails, you will need to do an erase and install of OS X and manually re-install all apps and data files.

    Thanks again,

I understand that RAM could cause an issue like this, but why would it work perfectly in Chrome, but not Safari, when all other factors are unchanged. I have the same apps open, the same everything.

Also, it's happening on three completely different computers.

Then it may be specific to your network installation. I would reset the modem and the router (I know its new) and also verify they have up-to-date firmware. The router may be new but the firmware installed may not be. Once you have verified and if necessary updated the firmware then restart each computer and retest. I would recommend restarting in Safe Mode and then restart normally before testing.

No luck. I even tried creating a personal hotspot on my iPhone, and connecting through that. Same issue.
