Q: how to reload apple mail (stamp icon)

I've done something to my apple mail where the format is all wrong.  I've lost the top bar so I have limited selection.  I can get and send mail so those things are find.  The message show it self on half the screen to the right if I place the curser over the e-mail name on the left.  The only way I can quit mail is to do a Command "Q".  Can I fix this?  or do I have to reload the application?

Would you make a screen shot so people can see what you are seeing? Make sure you cover any personal information using Preview. Post the screen shot in a Reply using the camera icon or you can drag the screen shot into a reply. Copy and paste doesn't work.

That top bar is missing, so I have no "View" or a "Toolbar" to select, just what you see in the screen shot!

I do not have any drafts.  I have messages in my Inbox, Sent and one in Trash (I'm saving).  I can send and receive all my e-mails.  I just can not do anything that was listed in the top bar.  To quit I must use Command + Q.

Are you in the full screen mode? Try command - control - F.

In your screenshot Drafts is highlighted on the left, try highlighting Inbox.

And, do you see the View menu at top left? What choices are selected?

I have no top menu bar, it has disappeared!  So even when I write an e-mail and save it in draft - I still have no top menu bar!  That is why I have to "Command Q" to quit.  The first words across the top are: Hide, Inbox, Sent, Draft and Flagged (pale print)  Under "mailboxes"in the left most column are:  Inbox, Sent, Junk and Trash.  When I create a draft then Draft shows up in the left hand column.  Any other suggestions?

"Command, Control, F" reduces the screen size, but still no menu bar at the top.  Back to Command Q.

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I'm so sorry, I do not understand many of the things you suggested.  I'm 73 yrs and I my last portable Mac was the PowerBook 5300 (7.5.2) and had to buy this MacBook Pro when the battery died.  I only use the very basic things since my knowledge is all based on my first Mac back in the 80's.  I saw instructions on this website on how to reload 10.9.5.  Do you think that would fix the mail "stamp" link?   OR  - should I upgrade to the new El Capitan the website says it's free.  If all else fails, I can remove the stamp from my screen tools and go directly to my e-mail provider (Roadrunner)., but I really liked the little stamp and hate to loose it!
