Aug 11, 2016 9:48 AM in response to ctc123by rkaufmann87,Scanners and printers are not "native" to any OS, the manufacturers of the devices choose to develop drivers for the OS's they want to support.
Have you considered using ImageCapture, it's pre-installed on your iMac is designed for scanning. You can find information about IC by clicking Mac Basics: Using a scanner - Apple Support

Aug 11, 2016 10:21 AM in response to rkaufmann87by ctc123,Thx. I did look at Image Capture when I bought the scanner but when I clicked the plus button to add it in Printers & Scanners the scanner didn't show up...so I installed the Cannon CaptureOnTouch and related software. I just tried to add it now but it still doesn't show up. What am I missing?

Aug 11, 2016 10:32 AM in response to ctc123by rkaufmann87,Please re-read the advice letter in my original post. I suspect you simply made an error in the method you used to connect the scanner. Please re-open that document and re-read it and follow the directions to the letter.

Aug 11, 2016 12:11 PM in response to rkaufmann87by ctc123,If you are referring to the mac basics: using a scanner article, Here's what it states.
Under under tips for scanning in OS X it states "Check the list of supported scanners…" when I follow that link to another document as far as I can tell the only Canon scanners listed are multifunction. In any case mine is not listed here.
"Use software update." I used it.
"Before you connect your scanner"" make sure the scanner is powered on and doesn't have any alerts displayed in its Control Panel." I powered on my scanner before connecting it and it does not have a Control Panel.
"Connect the scanner""Simply connect your… Scanner via USB cable." I connected my scanner via USB cable.
Further down it states "after you connect your scanner, run software update…" I ran software update again.
"Next, choose Apple, System preferences… And then choose view, print & scan." I chose the Apple icon and system preferences. Then the view menu and printers & scanners.
Next it states "click the plus icon below the printers pane on the left and select the printer you would like to add." By the letter this does not apply to me because I am not adding a printer. However since this is the final instruction I gave it a try anyway. My scanner is not listed.
Next it lists how to scan, Simplified scan mode, Advanced scanning options, and selecting areas to scan. When I open the image capture software, not surprisingly, there are zero devices to scan with.
Next it discusses how to connect a network shared scanner. I don't believe this applies to me because I'm connecting to my iMac via USB.
It should be as simple as that. So what am I missing?

Aug 12, 2016 12:09 PM in response to ctc123by rkaufmann87,★HelpfulOkay, can you confirm you are still running OS X 10.10.4? If so the reason it doesn't work is Cannon does not support that version of OS X.
The reason I want to confirm this is Canon indicates for that device they support Mac OS 10.7.5, Mac OS 10.8.5, Mac OS 10.9.1. If you are running 10.10.4 or later then you need to get a third party driver. The standard for third party drivers is VueScan https://www.hamrick.com/
You can check to see if the scanner is supported, if it is then you can download the trial version to see if it works okay and if it does then you can purchase the app. If it doesn't work then you should return the scanner and look for one that is more up-to-date.

Aug 11, 2016 2:54 PM in response to rkaufmann87by ctc123,thx. I always installed the latest and greatest operating systems, in this case 10.11.6.
Vuescan does list this scanner as being supported, But after installing I still don't see the scanner in the printers & scanners add window.
I tried the Vuescan software and it scanned but the resulting image is black.
Bummer. This is a 1 year old scanner, and it wasn't cheap.
So back to my original question, somewhat modified. Can you recommend a scanner that works with OS X Image Capture and Preview?
